"Barack Hussein Obama" in Texas school textbooks?
It almost happened. Check out this little exchange that happened during the debate over the Texas curriculum.

The State Board of Education voted to include President Obama in a revised social studies curriculum on Thursday after a Republican board member temporarily offered -- but then withdrew -- an amendment that would have listed the president’s full name -- Barack Hussein Obama.

“The intent behind what you’re doing, I think, is pretty obvious,” board member Bob Craig of Lubbock said after his fellow Republican, David Bradley of Beaumont, offered the amendment. “I just don’t think that’s correct.”

“We don’t have to insult the president of the United States,” Lawrence A. Allen Jr., a Houston Democrat and an African-American, told Bradley. “I’m asking you to please withdraw your amendment.”

Another member, Mary Helen Berlanga, D-Corpus Christi, said the motion would be “humiliating” to the nation’s first African-American president.

“I’ll put an end to the whining,” Bradley said. “I’ll withdraw the motion.”

“I don’t consider it whining,” snapped Mavis B. Knight, D-Dallas, an African-American.

2. I don't see why it would be "humiliating"
to use the man's name. It is the name he chose to use at his inauguration. What's the big deal?

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, William Henry Harrison, George Herbert Walker Bush, Dwight David Eisenhower, Richard Milhous Nixon and Ronald Wilson Reagan?

6. The only reason I would consider it a problem is that it would give a win
To the right wing nuts that think an Arabic name is insulting. Other than that, I have no problem with using the full name for every US President - as long as it is EVERY president and not just Obama.

Of course, even the White House web site is not consistent about the presidents' names - some have middle names, some just initials, some no middle name or initial. http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents

10. What's wrong with his name?
It's not like he named himself. He was sworn in with his full name so why shouldn't it be listed? The intent for the Republicans seems to be making themselves look ridiculous.

I remember at that dinner a couple of years ago when Obama did that little speech and said he was named by someone who didn't know he was going to run for president.

It's his name. He won. That's that.

14. As long as every other president's full name is listed, then fine with me

I'm pretty patriotic, and to me that means standing with the president of the United States in a time of war (read my sig line).

15. This is nothing
Of course list his name, for Chrissakes.

And get the other racist shit out of the curriculum, like downplaying Cesar Chavez, like saying there was no "slave trade" (YOU FUCKERS!), like saying the TJ really didn't have much influence as a Founding Father.

TEXAS TEACHERS I CALL ON YOU TO REVOLT AGAINST THESE FUCKING IDIOTS.

16. That is his name after all. Why is that a big deal?
Of all the things to complain about, this is really low priority.

17. As long as every other President's full name is listed, I have no problems.
However, if not, I know exactly what the asshole Republicans on the SBE were doing.

21. That's his name and I believe
that's how he was sworn in at his inauguration. If the Texans think and interpret Hussein as being something awful, un-American, a stigma, Ay-Rab, and something they snidely snicker at at their all-white country clubs, that's their effing problem. There are days I wish they WOULD secede.
