Fixing U.S. oil spill is "no feat", say Iranians
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LDE64M07N.htm

Plugging the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico is no great challenge compared to what Iran has dealt with in the past, an official at Iran's drilling company said on Sunday.

A long-standing adversary of the United States, oil producer Iran has offered to help fight the spill -- a gesture unlikely to be taken up by Washington which is pushing for new U.N. sanctions against Tehran's nuclear programme.

(snip)

Mehran Alinejad, the head of special drilling operations at the National Iranian Drilling Co., said Iran had successfully dealt with huge oil leaks in the past, particularly when rigs were bombed during a war with Iraq in the 1980s.

"Iranian technical teams have had major achievements in oil well capping compared with which the Gulf of Mexico oil rig is no feat," he told IRNA news agency.

(snip)

"There is at any rate an ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico whose negative consequences include everyone. That is why if we receive a suitable response from the officials of that country we can examine the issue and contribute to its resolution."

1. Oh shit
If this gets out there will be some heads exploding!!

Hey, Iran, we don't need no help. We are the smartest in the whole wide world.
We can handle this. It may not look like we can, but we can.

Or can we? There are some DUers who think that we can't. That BP is the bestest and they are the only ones who can fix this.

Methinks their little heads are gonna explode when they think we may have to get the Iranians to help.

2. There's a hard-wired respect for authority in some...
Even when that authority has led the nation to disaster time and time again, they put aside what they can with their own two eyes to support the perspective of the corporation or official body. When they do it by nature is one thing, when they do it to shut down discussion is another. Either way, they're missing the boat.

44. Except that none of Iran's wells were a mile deep in the ocean.
What works in the desert might not work that far under water. That being said, if Iran really could solve this problem, BP should suck it up and accept their help.

That would be too Christian like, this putting aside our differences and working toward an end that is good for all.

America is not a Christian nation, is it? They claim it is, well, it isn't is it? If it was they'd welcome the Iranian help. But it won't.

Unlikely in this administration, impossible in the previous. Still, it's a beautiful thought.

4. Personally, I wish we would take one of these countries up on their offer of help.
Sometimes I think we're only 'international' when it benefits our image to be that way.

The only question would be have these countries ever worked at the depths they're talking about? After all, this will have impact on the whole world, not only the US, especially if they don't do a thing until August/September.

16. If Iran can help; have at it!
And I say this as one who is still giving the President the benefit of the doubt. I don't see any specific things Obama could have done differently up to this point... However, I will be terribly disappointed if all possibilities are not put in to play in order to mitigate this already God-awful situation. If Iran truly can help, then I hope we take them up on their offer. This disaster is too big to let our differences with them (as huge as they are) interfere with a potential solution.

54. Honest Discussions-- 10 Steps
  1. Do not overstate the power of your argument.

  2. Show a willingness to publicly acknowledge that reasonable alternative viewpoints exist.

  3. Be willing to publicly acknowledge and question one’s own assumptions and biases.

  4. Be willing to publicly acknowledge where your argument is weak.

  5. Be willing to publicly acknowledge when you are wrong. Those selling an ideology likewise have great difficulty admitting to being wrong, as this undercuts the rhetoric and image that is being sold.

  6. Demonstrate consistency. A clear sign of intellectual dishonesty is when someone extensively relies on double standards.

  7. Address the argument instead of attacking the person making the argument.

  8. When addressing an argument, do not misrepresent it.

  9. Show a commitment to critical thinking.

  10. Be willing to publicly acknowledge when a point or criticism is good.

I don't have any idea if Iran can deal with this but it is obvious what profit has to do with the question. Corners are cut all the time in the name of increasing the bottom line. Corners that might have protected us from this and other crises we are facing.

Iran offers help in fighting Gulf of Mexico oil leak
TEHRAN, May 3 (Reuters) - An Iranian state company offered on Monday to help in preventing a vast oil slick that is moving towards the coast of the United States, the Islamic Republic's old foe, from causing an "ecological disaster".

Haidar Bahmani, managing director of the National Iranian Drilling Company, said his firm was ready to provide assistance in fighting the spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Oil Ministry's website SHANA reported.

Since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank last month, claiming 11 lives, hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude have been gushing into the Gulf, threatening wildlife and beaches.

"Our oil industry experts can curb the rig leakage in the Gulf of Mexico and prevent an ecological disaster in that part of the world," Bahmani said, without giving further details.

Iran's oil patch guys may very well have some helpful knowledge to contribute. It would be stupid to just brush this offer aside.

And what's wrong with making use of an opportunity to nudge relations between our two countries in more cooperative direction? We managed to reach detente with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, after all.

If Iran could help plug the oilcano, it seems to me it would be a positive development all the way around.
