are they just as bad? This gusher happened to hit BP. All our criticism since has been directed toward BP - and rightly so. They need to stop this disaster. But - if the right regulations weren't followed by BP - what of the other major oil companies out there and are there future disasters waiting to happened because of the same arrogance.

I'm not sure what the names are of the other major oil companies - but Exxon and Shell come to mind. I'm sure there are others. If anyone can shed any light on this I think it is worth a discussion.

We seem to be real good of after the fact - legislating laws and promulgating rules. It would be nice to be pro-active for once.

1. BP is the absolute worst among them

The most arrogant and reckless - with the worst safety and environmental record of any oil company operating in America, according to news reports.

5. That Might Be So - But The Media Didn't Report That Until After The Gusher In The Gulf......
I can't believe that all the other major oil companies are complying to all regs and not cutting corners. I want to find out now before one of them gets themself in a situation like BP is in today. Let's be pro-active for a change.

2. BP cut major corners here. I am not sure the other companies have
been willing to do that because of the risks. Of course, better regulations that were taken out by Cheney would help.

3. Also what about the Drilling in the non-US Waters of the Gulf.

7. I doubt they're much better.
Accidents do happen, as even Rand Paul recognizes in his own immature, corporatist way. That means there must be contingency plans in place to deal with whatever may happen. Of course contingency planning does not lead directly to huge profits so I suspect that makes it a good place for corporations to cut corners and not "waste" much time and resources. And not just at BP. Therefore good contingency planning would likely have to be mandated by law and enforced by the government.

The oil industry and/or government may have to consider creating one or more rapid response teams/plans to deal with disasters wherever they may occur. Or whatever...
