Progressive Adrian nuns under Vatican's scrutiny
BY PATRICIA MONTEMURRI
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

They've taught legions of Detroit-area Catholics. They've taken on major corporations. They are watchdog nuns who have urged U.S. companies to be socially responsible.

But to the Vatican, the Adrian Dominican congregation of 850 progressive nuns may be a problem, especially under the conservative papacy of Pope Benedict XVI.

For five days this spring, a Vatican-backed team studied the Adrian Dominicans at their motherhouse in Lenawee County. They are among at least 19 sister congregations being investigated under a process called the Apostolic Visitation.

The investigation hits at a time when the Vatican is dealing with escalating criticism of its oversight of priests accused of sexually abusing children.

While church officials have said the study is necessary to account for the shrinking number of American nuns, the Rev. Thomas Reese, a Jesuit priest at Georgetown University's Woodstock Theological Center, called it a "disastrous PR move by the Vatican."

"When American Catholics find out (nuns) are being investigated by the Vatican, they scratch their heads and say, 'What is this all about?' " said Reese, a Catholic commentator. "There has always been at the Vatican a deep suspicion of U.S. nuns because they are educated, outspoken and don't like to be pushed around."

more, much more...

3. Pope Benny must be the biggest asshole they could find even among the cardinals...
To elect such a fascist to be pope is just an amazing spit in the face of the lay members of the church. He will cause even more people to leave, and will blame them instead of himself.

He is just not a good or trustworthy man - I have no idea what criteria were used to decide he should be pope, but they should re-write the election manual after this bastard.

9. I have a number of class mates who still feel tramatized by
things nuns did to us boys in grammar school. Not sexual molestation but very nasty and cruel treatment none the less.

Where its read "There has always been at the Vatican a deep suspicion of U.S. nuns because they are educated, outspoken and don't like to be pushed around.".

It should say "There has always been among religious leaders a deep suspicion of educated, outspoken women who won't let their organization push them around".

There, that's better.

20. Reminds me of what Wangari Matthai's husband said when he divorced her --
She's too educated, too opinionated, and too hard to control.

Or words to that effect.

I wonder if Pope Ratzo will hold public burnings of these women. Gotta get yer point across somehow, can't have this stuff spreading among the peasants.

7. Are these the Carmelite nuns that had the "Pray the News" website?
Shortly after George Bush was elected, the Carmelite nuns of Indianapolis started a website called "Pray the News". Different issues (and different viewpoints) were discussed by the nuns. There was a feeling of sweetness to their discussions of the day.....as well as an underlining sense of "listen-up-we-have-opinions-too!" The website is gone now, but you might still be able to read their farewell statement here:

www.praythenews.com/

They said that they are the Carmelite sisters of Indianapolis and after 75 years...."have made the decision to move" (I am wondering if this order moved to Michigan?) They said they were "discontinuing the website....but the spirit of praying the news will continue on the great 'net' of our connectedness to God."

It was a refreshingly innocent, as well as progressive, website.....I assume the Vatican had something to do with their "decision to move".

8. I have a relative who's a liberal nun.
I hate to use this phrase but I think this is the vatican's way of saying "All your base are belong to us".

11. Whenever there has been a war of wills between male principals of the
the church and nuns, believe me the nuns have won. The Vatican better watch out. Those sisters, especially if they are Domincans, will have that Pope by his balls when this is all over and done.

14. they're looking for MONEY and POWER
(in that order)

MONEY to pay off the pedophile lawsuits

and POWER over women religious.

They'll raid their treasuries, sell their land holdings, put an end to their "community activism", force them back into 13th century garb, and return them to polishing monstrances and scrubbing sanctuaries, like back in the good old days.

A community in my old neighborhood is also on the list for an, ahem, "Apostolic Visitation". Their Motherhouse sits on some very valuable land.

16. Small world, isn't it.
Adrian, MI is about 20,000 people, and apparently home to both 850 progressive nuns and Mr. "Scar my tattered body no more with your punishing dildo mallet!"'s group.

http://www.adriandominicans.org/OurMissionVision/MissionVision.aspx

Mission
In the mission of Jesus
we Adrian Dominican Sisters
discover and identify ourselves
as women called together
to share faith and life
with one another
and sent into our world
to be with others
bearers and recipients of his love,
co-creators of his justice and peace.

Vision
We Dominican
Preachers of Adrian
impelled by the Gospel
and outraged by the injustices
of our day
seek truth;
make peace;
reverence life.

Stirred by the Wisdom of God
and rooted in our
contemplative prayer,
communal study and life in community,
we challenge heresies of local and global
domination, exploitation, and greed
that privilege some, dehumanize others,
and ravage Earth.

We confront our racist attitudes
and root out racist practices
in our lives and systems.

Honestly, if all religious people had this attitude the world would be a better place
