Norfolk principal put on leave after school staffer hands out fetus dolls to elementary students
Okay, before the teacher bashers chime in, please note this says "school staffer", which can be a custodian or a cafeteria worker as well as a teacher. And I can't imagine why a teacher would be identified as a school staffer instead of a teacher.

At any rate, this is not only really bad but also very stupid.

Oakwood Elementary's principal was placed on administrative leave Friday as school officials investigated why life like, 4-inch-long plastic fetus dolls were given to dozens of third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students.

On Thursday, the school staffer thought to be responsible for handing out the dolls was placed on leave.

Oakwood took another hit this week when the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia blasted its principal for inviting students and teachers to participate in prayer and Bible study. The organization said such acts are coercive and violate the Constitution.

The group asked Superintendent Stephen Jones in a letter sent Friday to immediately instruct Oakwood Principal Sheila Tillett Holas on the constitutional rights of teachers and students, and to stop religious overtures to them, as well as all organized religious activity on school grounds.

3. Creepy...
.... and wrong. Wonder if the principal had knowledge? That would be the only reasonable reason for punishing her.

4. Well it's not surprising to me
The principal is responsible for everything that happens in the school. With or without the principal's knowledge. So a staff member does something stupid and the principal goes down too.

19. Evidently, you didn't make it to the bottom of the excerpt.
blasted its principal for inviting students and teachers to participate in prayer and Bible study.
It's a public school. The school-prayer decision covers this.

14. Good point
Anyone who thinks this is appropriate for children, even at church, is not playing with a full deck.

15. 8 and 9 year old girls.
I have fundie relatives. I love them but cannot stand to be around them. so, I simply avoid them.

when their daughter was in middle school, their church would have haunted houses with aborted fetuses as part of the scare... and girls burning in hell who'd had abortions.

I think fundies are as dangerous as a cult as Jim Jones's was. The only difference between them is that fundies have more members.

and the daughter? she spent some time with me and my kids and she hates her parents with a white hot hate that comes from this kind of psychological abuse.

in a Catholic Girls HS back in the 60s. It was in the Bio Lab. After the initial shock, it was, "Ok, so big deal." We disected fetal pigs in Soph. Bio. lab back in the 60s.

As I've said many times before, you want to "cure" your kids of religion, send them to Catholic school.

Edit: I always wonder looking at it where they got it from and why they didn't give it a "proper Catholic burial". I asked but they just got mad at me and told me to be quiet.

18. Why no "proper Catholic burial"? It probably hadn't been baptized.
My cousin had a stillbirth or miscarriage, I forget which, and she was not allowed to have it buried in a Catholic cemetery because it had not been baptized. She had been an active churchgoer, but this pissed her at the church from that moment on.
