David Gergen on a WWII type response to the oil disaster
Although this disaster is not an existential threat, it could be argued that if the U.S. government had fought World War II in the same way it has fought the oil spill, we might well be speaking German now. Faced with a growing danger to our well-being, a WWII-type government would at minimum have:
• Brought in the CEOs of all the major oil companies and charged them with the duty of an all-hands collaborative effort to stop the spill and help ward off the damage.
• Brought in the best minds in the country, from universities and technology, for emergency efforts to find solutions.
• Moved quickly to mobilize the National Guard and other military forces, if necessary, ensuring that they received the resources needed to protect our beaches.
• Made a clear call to citizen volunteers to help where necessary.
• Given Cabinet officers an ultimatum: Get this under control in the next 30 days, or else.
There will be ample time after this disaster for finger-pointing and blame-laying. The key now is to get this spill under control before it does far more damage.

1. We can still do this, but time is running out.
For all of us.

2. The unrecc trolls are out in force today
If it doesn't match the official narrative they don't want anyone to see it. Hmmmm, where have we seen that type of behavior before?

3. That would require a government by the people and for the people or a
real democracy like we had back then. We would also need FDR who didn't mind doing the unpopular thing to set things right.

4. THAT is the kind of response I want(ed) to see.
There should have been an all out effort by our government and it has not happened.

Even if the Administration knows all attempts to cap this will fail and the relief well is the only answer, there could be tremendous ground being made to control/recover the oil that has been flowing.

It has been a FUCKING MONTH.

The response has been pathetic.

15. It's the kind of response
that was delivered and is ongoing.

16. That is a minimal response
when an all hands on deck response is needed. They know the oil is headed around florida, nothing is being put into place to protect sensitive estuaries. The response has been pathetic in protecting wetlands in Louisiana too.
Meh

5. Ah, socialism...

David Gergen apparently thinks the US government can simply order corporations to do what they are ordered to do.

In a way, that's a refreshing change from his usual stance.

10. I don't think it would be an order as much as a strong request
Kind of like when Roosevelt commissioned the Manhattan Project.

6. Wow! What a link!

David Gergen has astonished me. He knows what's at stake. His suggestions are perfect.

I hope the administration pays attention. If they don't this well stands to be Obama's Katrina event. But it's not about Obama, or Jindal or partisan politics. A good portion of America's precious coastal wetlands could be destroyed, allowing a toxic ocean to further intrude into an American state. Plus the seafood industry stands to be decimated. This is big.

14. I wonder if they are making progress on financial reform
And transparency in many sectors, it seems the consolidation and its bad effects from that are still trying to run things from secret rooms, as if that is a claim to set social policy.
