CC: By August leak could EQUAL Exxon Valdeez amount ? ???

There isn't even a mention that the statement is only remotely possible if the now dismissed BP/Coast Guard estimates were accurate. Poor article and an unreal comment from Allen.

"The blowout preventer did not function properly after the rig sank about 40 miles off Louisiana, and oil has been gushing into the Gulf ever since at an estimated rate of about 5,000 barrels a day (210,000 gallons). Some estimates have put the amount of oil spewing from the well far higher.

The company also could try a "junk shot," which would involve plugging the well with rubber and other substances, BP's Managing Director Robert Dudley said.

However, a final, permanent solution could take until August -- the estimated completion date for a relief well that is being dug on a parallel course with other efforts to stop the leak, said Allen.

By the time the leaking well is finally capped, the amount of oil discharged could be comparable to the total released in the Exxon Valdez environmental disaster 20 years ago, Allen said..."

If the people not facing indictment are correct (and I trust them a lot more than BP) this spill is equaling the Valdez every 3 or 4 days already. Geez...talk about burying your head in the oil encrusted sand...
