The USA already has a single payer health care system, seems to me,

only thing is, you have to be 65 or over to qualify. (Or be disabled.)

As an almost 60-year-old who hasn't had group medical insurance since the early 1990s, this really pisses me off. :grr:

I have a high-deductible individual health insurance policy that specifically excludes 2 pre-existing health conditions. (Which is why individual insurance sucks mightily.)

If single payer is so great for those over 65, why isn't it great for those under 65?

1. The White House doesn't think Single Payer or a Public Option are worth talking about. nt

2. I assume you are talking about Medicare...
as single-payer. It is not single-payer. Both Medicare and the RECIPIENT of care pay the bills for care.

Single-payer is what it says it is...it pays ALL costs connected with treatment.

3. Are you sure about that? Well, let's say "national health plan" then.

11. Thats not really single payer...
Nor is Medicare in Australia, notwithstanding what Wikipedia says on that point.

The distinguishing feature of a single payer system is that there is only one entity paying for all of the services, therefore there is much less administrative costs and complexity in obtaining payment for medical services.

The public hospital systems run in the various Canadian provinces are arguable single payer, but Medicare itself is not, as it isnt the only health insurer in the market (about 30% of Canadians have some type of health insurance).

6. BINGO: The key word is "BEFORE" the negotiations started.

8. Medicare Part D
Biggest mistake made was calling it the "public option". Shoulda just called it Medicare Part E and then argued about how low an age, and how high a cost. Probably coulda thrown in the whole "26 year old adult child" feature under that and gotten the next generation of tax payers used to the idea that they "purchase" their health insurance from the government.

9. Grayson's bill HR 4789
I thought Grayson's bill HR 4789 - Medicare You Can Buy Into Act was a wonderful idea. After all the hoopla, not even a vote on a "real" public option. www.WeWantMedicare.org
