Hay being made about Obama skipping Memorial Day Celebration to go on Vacation...
I can't say I agree with that decision, but did past Presidents ever do that? Headed back out to make sense of this,*IF* it's true.

1. If he's so careful to keep conservatives happy with every goddamned policy...
...why the hell doesn't he placate them every chance he gets...when all that is required is an empty gesture?

2. Yes even Saint Reagan did it.
Just more fained outrage from the right.

4. And if he'd been at the celebration, they'd complain he was grandstanding
It's typical "heads I win, tails you lose" griping masquerading as reportage. If Obama was at a Memorial Day event, somebody would grumble that he'd never been in the military, and what was he doing there. If he's not at the event, they'll grumble that he'd never been in the military, and should damn well be there.

Jesus described the phenomenon centuries ago, when he contrasted his work with John the Baptist. People refused to listen to John because he was so ascetic; people refused to listen to Jesus because he wasn't ascetic. There is indeed nothing new under the sun.

6. I believe some people have forgotten
That memorial day isn't about going to the beach, drinking beer and eating hamburgers.

It's one day out of the year to honor all those who have died defending this country with a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington by the Commander in Chief.

It's not a job you pawn off on anyone else unless you're hospitalized.

7. The meaning behind "Decoration Day" has been lost. This early in his tenure he should be there.

He can send Biden or MObama to do it in subsequent years.

He'll be at a cemetery in Chicago, which is nice.

9. He's attending a ceremony at another national cemetary
Aren't those veterans deserving as well?

10. Arlington national Cemetery
Is a bit different. Soldiers from every single war from the revolution forward are buried at Arlington. The Tomb of the Unknowns, representing soldiers who died and whose remains were not able to be identified, is located at Arlington. It's not a matter of "deserving", it's an issue of the cemetery representing all fallen soldiers.

11. And Biden will take care of laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown
I just don't have a problem with the President giving a tribute at a cemetary other than Arlington.

14. I have a problem with it
Are we asking too much of the President to take one day out of the year to appropriately and formally honor soldiers who died in battle? Does it make too great a demand on him?

And for the record, I don't give anyone else who couldn't be bothered to show up a pass either. Unless they're hospitalized, it's part of their job as Commander in Chief.

Reagan, HW Bush and GW Bush skipped Memorial Day. You should really read the whole thread. And he is attending Memorial Day events, just in Chicago and not Arlington National.

15. And if he stayed in DC he'd be criticized for dishonoring the war dead
I swear to God, if he gave every American citizen a million dollars, his critics would complain that it wasn't two million.
