Who are some handsome liberal/Democratic men?
So my uncle sent out this offensive email that showed beautiful, airbushed photos of attractive Republican women and compared them to the most unflattering candid photos of older Democratic women. (Helen Thomas? C'mon. Why make fun of an 87-year-old woman for her looks? He can only hope he's half as brilliant as she is when he's that old.)

So my mother and I decided to make one with gorgeous liberal men and hideous conservative men and send it back to him. I've got all the ugly conservatives I need. That was easy. I already have several pictures of liberal celebrities, but I'm looking for some handsome Democratic men who are not Hollywood types. Of course, feel free to suggest Hollywood types too. I'm sure I forgot some.

(Mods, if this belongs in the lounge, feel free to move it.)

Hey, airbrushing can erase a multitude of sins. Sort of like the color black makes one appear slimmer.

How about Skinner consider putting out an eye candy calendar entitled:

The Handsome Men of DU?

I should hope no one is taking it seriously. We're giving my uncle a bad time, just as he did to us.

Although I was offended at the inclusion of Helen Thomas. That was bad form.

6. Russ Feingold and Rahm Emmanuel (and Heath Shuler, I guess)
Edited on Wed May-26-10 02:24 PM by zazen
Shuler's not my type, but I think people think he's attractive.

But I think as women, as research repeatedly demonstrate, have more flexible standards for male attractiveness (I believe regardless of whether they're straight or GLBT), and liberal women, anecdotally, are more tolerant and probably more wide-ranging in their standards than conservative women, sadly your e-mail back to your uncle will probably fall on deaf ears.

I notice Republican men are very silent on the appearance of Repub women when they don't meet their silly standards. I remember one Republican female columnist making fun of how "ugly the women at Smith College were," about 20 years ago. That woman is now "conventionally" unattractive, since she's over 50 and looks it (God forbid). As Mose Allison used to sing, "if you live, your time will come." Do these women never think the same ridiculous standards won't apply to them?

21. I think you're right about the flexible standards for male attractiveness.
Edited on Wed May-26-10 02:55 PM by Kitty Herder
For example, I wanted to include Rahm Emmanuel, but my mom vetoed that. She says he's ugly. Ugly? I think he's very attractive. Even though I don't like his DLC politics. Mom's comment made me realize he's not conventionally attractive. But those eyes...

Women seem to have such different ideas of what is attractive and I think most of us find some men attractive who don't fit the male model ideal.

But when I started putting it together today, I discovered we had a bunch of movie stars and only two politicians.

73. Sean Tevis

Tevis barely lost his race for the state House in Kansas in 2008, and he is running again in 2010.

78. Tell him that beauty is only skin deep
Which makes those Republican women ugly because they are so nasty inside. On the other hand, it makes Helen Thomas one of the most beautiful humans alive because she cares about her fellow humans.

With the snide remark about why do so many men vote Republican. I had the same reaction. Repukes seem to have the lock on ugly men! We have Al Gore and the Kennedys. They have Newties and Boner.

88. I wouldn't play on this level.
not even for "fun". I would simply acknowledge in a response that it appears the republicans who composed that email value women primarily as superficial sex objects, and therein lies one of the problems with republicans. They might want to reflect on whether or not that's why they end up with the likes of Sarah Palin as their VP nominee.
