Libertarian Lament

Daniel Johnson Salem-News.com
In the end the libertarian lament is psychologically no different than the tantrum of a child.

Actual logo of Libertarian Party of Union County.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - People, generally speaking, don’t like to be told what to do. Even if it is demonstrably for their own good or for a publicly acknowledged greater good, there are those who resent or resist or both, what they perceive to be authoritarian coercion.

I can empathize with the libertarian creed because I, too, like to have my personal freedom and to be left alone. Ideally, this only works at Walden Pond although Thoreau still depended on the civilized world for many of his physical needs. He took tools, etc., with him. He was not sui generis but was an extension of the society that formed him.

A true libertarian cannot exist.

So, in principle, libertarianism can only be viable if a very small proportion of citizens opt for that philosophy. They won’t be missed

The real libertarians, it would seem, are the rich and the very rich. One definition of money that I favour is that it is stored work. If you have a few million dollars, for example, you can pay others to do the work you don’t want to do, or don’t have the time to do (i.e., you prefer to do other things). You’re in a position where you don’t have to work at all!

2. Let the all go to Somalia where they'll find the society the dream about.
Free from the burden of big government and taxes and bereft of civilization.

3. Again that article is in the frame of being able to own someone.
Edited on Wed May-26-10 11:55 PM by RandomThoughts
The bold part about putting someone in jail presumes being able to own a person. It is theoretically possible that a person could be put in prison, but their mind and heart is still theirs, and that is where freedom is.

The true lack of freedom is following an authoritarian system that tries to put free people in prison for not agreeing to what is know as wrong.

If a person is free, then the act of trying to put them in prison for wrong reasons, is the guard putting themselves in slavery and prison, not the person they try to put in prison.

That is the story of the guards trying to throw a person in a fire, and him not being singed, yet the guards getting thrown in the fire instead.

Without any context of libertarianism, but with the bigger context of what is right, and where is a person free.

Good time to post this clip again.

5. Great article, describes them to a T
and gives a real world example of what happens when they try to put their silly dreams into practice.

7. The BP atrocity upon us now is a perfect of libertarianism in practice, if not policy
Regulations were in place that certainly would have served to arrest this event before it occurred, but BP was allowed to proceed as though there were none.

Thankfully I'm retired from the biz and won't have to solve their multitudiness problems.
