OMG the caller on Stephanie
Edited on Thu May-27-10 08:30 AM by rurallib
his sister killed herself because she was gay and he's blaming himself.
He is really breaking down.
ETA - he is very conservative. Blames his views for helping drive her to suicide.
Stunned me.... so sad

1. I know of the caller ..... he was a right hack
Edited on Thu May-27-10 08:33 AM by Botany
And now he feels bad ...... he sees the error of his way
but it is too late. He might of made fun of his sister for being gay.

Jerry from Chicago .... I hope he finds peace.

Steph is showing real love

21. This is So Sad...
Why do people always learn the hard way, and usually at the expense of a loved one's suicide. I thank God every day that my mother finally came round before her death and was very supportive in her last years, and for my spouse's family which has always been supportive.

I hope he does get counselling. He is going to need it--and I hope good will come of it.

2. Sure sounds like he made her feel guilty about all the time, and
figures it ended up contributing to her suicidal feelings. :(

Maybe he'll learn something from this, and SOMETHING good will come of this tragedy.

4. I pity you
The man publicly came out on a national show to admit his mistakes and shared
his pain and you call him an asshole.

I pity you.

Maybe they should try doing it before they kill someone

17. Or when they have no other choice, like that elderly parent who finally accepted her
gay son when she was close to homelessness and her straight children just couldn't be bothered with their mom, but the gay son, who had always worshipped his mother even though she hated his gayness and condemned his 'lifestyle', opened his home to her, and she asked for forgiveness. He, of course, did so without complaint, but since most of us gay people have seen this story unfold exactly like that many times before, we aren't so forgiving.

The lack of it currently is what separates people. Walk tall.

33. I'm eternally grateful...
that my mom's very old-school, very Catholic parents accepted her. My mom knew she'd never have to worry about what my youngest sister and I thought (middle sister is another story), and that we'd *always* make sure to tkae care of her best interests. But I was concerned that my grandparents wouldn't accept her. They did (and when I say old school, I'm not kidding: 80s, Italian/Spanish Catholic).

Someone who will not only help him through his pain, but also help him walk into the light and learn something.

12. It would be sadder if he still retained his prejudice and felt glad about her death.
He seems to have actual and real contrition and transformation. I'm very sorry about his sister's suicide and wish it never happened. If he can save himself, he may thank God one day for her.

27. I wouldn't assume that "all of his beliefs were shaken to the core."`
He could still be a gay-friendly anti-Semite disciple of Ayn Rand who believes government is evil.

As long as there are Log Cabin Republicans, he can still maintain the rest of his core beliefs and keep the cognitive dissonance from exploding his head.

But the door is open a crack.

Let's just hope he doesn't opt for that suicide hotline run by Catholic Charities that once caller to the show suggested. (Catholic Charities is virulently anti-gay. They're the ones that shut-down their adoption program rather than run the imaginary risk of being forced to place kids with gay parents).

Very afraid of hurting people again. Yes, maybe he was acting and it was all to get a bunch of air time on the radio. But, I'm doubting he's that good of an actor. (BTW, I'm Jewish).

32. My skepticism centers on whether or not his new-found empathy extends beyond gay people.
Edited on Fri May-28-10 07:44 AM by Ian David
He could be Pro-Gay and Anti-Jewish.

If he has a heterosexual sister who wants to become Jewish, he could still drive HER to suicide, too.

I didn't hear him say he's decided he was wrong about everything and that he's suddenly become a bleeding heart Liberal overnight.

There are plenty of pro-gay conservative thugs. They're called The Log Cabin.

I'm reserving judgment, but willing to help RW Jerry if he shows up here.

26. Well, if we can open Right-Wing Jerry's eyes on THIS issue, maybe the rest can be fixed later.
Right-Wing Jerry should have our support and empathy right now. I, for one, have no sympathy for him, but do feel compassion for his situation. Just not for him, personally.

And that should be enough for us to treat him kindly and make sure he gets the help he needs.

22. well, I hate to say it, but . ..
that may have been a factor.

Having your family "HATE YOU" because of who you are is even worse than having society at large hate you.

I'm sorry for his loss. And I'm sorry he "feels bad", but maybe this will help him help others to stop being close-minded @ssholes.

Let's wait and see just how much Right-Wing Jerry grows from this.

He COULD become like Donna Milo http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=221x160158

or he could become like Charles Johnson from Little Green Footballs that went from far-right white supremacist to full-blown Liberal seemingly overnight. http://rightwingnews.com/2009/09/the-descent-of-little-green-footballs/

I think, if RW Jerry reaches-out to the Progressive community, how we treat him could be the most important factor.

So, if he shows-up here, or on any of our other message boards, BE NICE TO HIM.
