The same techniques used now are the same used in the 1979 Ixtoc 1 diaster.

In 1979 "Top Hat" was "Operation Sombrero". And the sombrero was deployed after the junk shot failed to kill the well.

If any good comes out of this, it'll be that the industry learns how to better kill a runaway deep water well. Hopefully.

2. I'm asking this after a heated debate - I actually don't know.

The tech. May not exist but are the best engineers being dployed to
solve the problem?

Does BP or Shell or others 'own' the best minds
for solving this?
