I had the experience of being involved some with Nova M Radio Network, doing a show aired on it from it's flagship station and watched as it fell apart. I got to see it first hand and be involved to a degree. I now do a show that airs mostly on the internet and a small station in Kentucky and has aired before in San Antonio and Waveland Mississippi but got dropped because it was too controversial. We mostly pay for it from listeners donations which often fail to meet the cost and because of my experiences I have had communications with others who tried to make a network work. So why is it nothing is working too well?
I have found the number one problem is the lack of willingness from Progressive/Liberal Business People to accept anything less than instant profits, or fear that it is going to be too controversial and hurt their businesses. Even a company like Credo Mobile who prides themselves on being Progressive has not only not done anything to help us, but when I tried to get one of them on the phone, they gave me even less of an answer than Joe Arpaio who at least called back and said no. I have Credo and like it, but why they won't even return a call to be a guest on a show that would feature their services and projects is hard to explain.
Listeners are another thing in some cases. Some listeners tune in every time, and support with their often meager incomes, while some just tune in. Some will listen until you say the first thing they don't agree with and brand you not a liberal or progressive because of it. Others just don't tune in because it isn't on a terrestial station close to them, or because of whatever reasonable or unreasonable excuse they can come up with, and you can bet we have heard them all.
Another reason is often an owner or head of it will not be in it to turn a profit such as was with Nova M. Once the station in Phoenix turned a profit for 6 months, and was actually the number 2 station in Phoenix, the owners decided to fire the CEO and talent that had built the station. Then there are those who head up stations and are too lazy to do the research but love to hear themselves talk. People then say oh how great we have a progressive/liberal station even though little attention is given to local issues and little or no effort is given to give the people more insight into issues, but since they can call in and announce as a caller some event, that is good enough.
I was the first and only Progressive/Liberal to broadcast regularly on a terrestial station in Mississippi, and did so for about 2 years, and so yes people will listen, but right wingers and our own side will end it just on one issue even if it is a topic not agreed on by our own progressive/liberal community.
I wish we could make things work and we do have good places like Head On Radio Network, our network
http://thejefffariasshow.com but until we support them in all areas, we will prove the right wing right, Progressive/Liberal Radio won't work. Not because it won't draw listeners, but because we simply won't support it.
