Britain's new government moves to scrap ID cards
By Janet Stobart, Special to the Los Angeles Times
May 27, 2010 | 3:59 p.m.

Reporting from London —

Britain's new government announced Thursday that its first major legislation will be a bill to scrap a controversial and costly plan to introduce national identification cards.

"ID cards will be gone in a 100 days," Home Secretary Theresa May said at a news conference.

May said the government would save more than $1 billion in the next decade by canceling the cards and the corresponding national registry. The cards contain biometric data, photographs and fingerprints.

3. Probably, but there had to be a reason they don't want to talk about.
Back in 80's Reagan and his crowd floated the idea of going cashless and everybody using a debit card. I pointed out at the time that the politicians would never go for that since they wouldn't be able to hide their bribes. The idea never went any further than that

4. Labour had already made them non compuslory a year ago.
Notwithstanding that the cost of the scheme was £4.9 billion - £'s not $'s. There were other "freedom" issues abandoned by our new coalition last week too. The one thing they couldn't remove was biometric cards for foreign nationals resident here which is an EU requirement they cannot override.

6. Brits hate ID cards
They see ID cards as French and German European madness. There is no place on earth that objects to national ID cards more than Britain.
