WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama returns to the endangered Gulf of Mexico coast Friday afternoon, as oil giant BP PLC now says it needs two more days before it knows whether it has clamped shut a broken well that has gushed millions of gallons of crude for more than a month.

Mr. Obama is making his second visit to the Gulf, where oil now washes ashore—killing wildlife, fouling fragile wetlands and marring white sand beaches. He took responsibility Thursday for stopping the spewing well but admitted the U.S. government doesn't have the technology or expertise for the job and must rely on BP.

On Friday morning, BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward said it would be about 48 hours before it can be known if pumping heavy mud into the blown-out well is successful in stopping what is now the worst U.S. oil spill.

Mr. Obama was to attend a briefing at the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Grand Isle, La., by Adm. Thad Allen, who is overseeing the response to the spill.

Adm. Allen said BP's work Friday will tell if a cap can hold. He told ABC's "Good Morning America" that the mud pumped into the well has pushed the oil down, but the challenge is going to be to keep enough pressure on the oil flow to put a cement plug in place.

"The real question is, can we sustain it, and that'll be the critical issue going through the next 12 to 18 hours,'' Adm. Allen said.

2. Well, it's obviously not working.
Everyday now we're at least a couple of days from knowing whether or not it is working.

BP is stalling ... what for?

3. Relief well.
They have orders to tap dance for another 70 days until relief wells are complete.

Sadly everything other than the relief well is a Hail Mary.

They will drag this on till the weekend. Then announce next plan, then take 3-5 days to get ready, then try it for 3-5 more days, then give up.

Repeat that 10x and the relief wells will be complete.

4. Why isn't there any legislation in Congress "RIGHT FUCKING NOW"
that would mandate the drilling of relief wells CONCURRENTLY with the drilling of the main well?

6. Cause It Probably Wouldn't Pass...
The "urgency" of stopping this gusher ends at the political water's edge. I honestly doubt there would be 60 votes in the Senate to do much more than slap BP's hands. We'd get a Cornyn or some other rushpublican shitstain grandstanding or putting a "hold" on any legislation and then there are few Blue Dogs (like Landreu) who still see this as an "accident" and are too in bed with BP and big oil to hurt one of their biggest contributors.

This government doesn't do anything "right now"...except when it comes to voting to raise their pay.

5. It will work

The engineering now has the best minds working on this problem.
Obama finally sent some of his people in to interact with BP.

Now that the will to fix this is overwhelming, I have complete faith the experts will devise a way to cap the well as best as humanly possible.

It is just a matter of time. It took 5 weeks to get here, but here we are.

Next time you can bet the responsible party will not be allowed to run the show all on their own for 5 weeks. Next time Obama's people will be there on day 2.
