I have been in 60 feet of water 35 miles offshore and could make out the bottom structure. My heart is broken.

1. I spent my high school years on the gulf coast
Graduated from Gulfport High School in '82. Spent a lot of time in those waters with my grandfather on his boat and later on my own boat. I'm so angry about this I don't know what to think anymore. I'm sick over it. :(

2. I understand the sick over it
I grew up between crystal river and homosassa fl. we used to take a boat out to the oyster bars with post hole diggers and hot sauce, and just set out there shucking oysters.

3. yes indeed
post hole diggers, hot sauce and plenty of beer!

I used to run crab pots under the piers and throw a cast net all day. I'd get enough shrimp and crab to fill up a big boiling pot and it was party time. :toast:

4. Gigging flounder around Alligator Point.
Come back in at dawn and throw the cast net for some mullet. I miss cheese grits!

5. I purposely didn't mention the beer
b/c I wasn't quite 18 yet, and that was the age back then. And yeah, I can remember running the crab traps and throwing cast nets too. Those shrimp tasted so good, the best shrimp on your plate is when they aren't all roughly the same size.

7. Exactly
I used to love it when I caught a bunch of different sized shrimp. :)

And, I can't forget the speckled trout we would catch in the ship channel....damn they were good!

8. Never seen it or even been down there but ...
Edited on Fri May-28-10 10:05 AM by NNN0LHI
.. I am so sick about this I feel like throwing up.

I keep thinking about the idiot Republicans up here who were pushing to get public support on their side for oil drilling in the Great Lakes. Those lakes I have seen. And drank from.

I get a shiver down my spine whenever I think about ever having an oil spill on Lake Michigan.

Jeebuz.

9. Gorgeous!
Beautiful!

Here's pix of Panama City Beach, FL. Awesome white sand and crystal clear water. I grew up going to Panama City Beach, Alligator Point, St. Marks then lived near Florida Keys for years.

10. I still go out there on occasion.
I've been doing some kayaking on the Anclote River, near the mouth of the gulf. Monday, we were kayaking in Weeki Wachee Springs. Saw lots of manatees and schools of fish in the crystal clear water.
