Coast Guard Tells Louisiana Residents Oil Spill is not an Environmental Disaster

Two days before the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced that the Deepwater Horizon accident had easily eclipsed the Exxon Valdez disaster as the nation’s worst-ever oil spill, U.S. Coast Guard representative Edward Stanton downplayed the seriousness of the matter at a town hall meeting in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.

“I don’t consider this an environmental disaster,” Stanton told an audience of concerned fishermen and local residents. “But it is an economic disaster.”

Stanton’s remarks did not sit well with those listening. Attendees wanted to know why the U.S. government wasn’t being more active to stem the hemorrhaging of oil in the Gulf of Mexico. They also questioned federal officials’ reluctance to challenge BP, operator of the oil platform, and its attempts to break up the oil using toxic chemicals.

“Where the heck does that even come from in the United States that corporations are going to dictate to the government what they’re not going to do and what they will do?” asked fisherman Mike Frenette, regarding the government’s decision to continue allowing BP to use dispersants banned in the United Kingdom.

The USGS estimates between 18 million and 39 million gallons of oil have been discharged into the ocean. The Exxon Valdez spill was 11 million gallons.

1. BP should at least cover the salary of the Coast Guard brass...
since they seem to represent their interests over the public's.

4. The first casualty of war is truth.
This also applies to any disaster when the responsible party makes a statement. It may take years for the truth to come out.

7. Let me spell it out for you:

1. Irregardless of the "B", BP is a card-carrying member of the American Petroleum Mafia;
2. The American Military Machine, including the Coast Guard, is the number one customer for the Petroleum Mafia;
3. The Petroleum Mafia is the primary "sugar daddy" of the American national politician;
4. Just about EVERY politician at the national level has taken some type of funding from the Petroleum Mafia and/or the Military Machine; and
5. The American Military Machine, including the Coast Guard, is being increasingly used as the Mafia's own private mercenary army and PR staff.

9. Considering that the Coast Guard and Admiral Allen just parrot what BP tells them to say...
They must not have recieved the latest BP statement this morning when they finally admitted it was.

The Coast Guard probably wasn't up to date on their talking points. They'll fall in line with the BP statement by the end of the day.

The crew members aboard three separate vessels "reported experiencing nausea, dizziness, headaches and chest pains" mid-afternoon Wednesday, the US Coast Guard said in a statement.

The move raises questions over the safety of the clean-up operation in and around the Gulf of Mexico, in particular the protection workers have been given as they mitigate the oil, and the toxicity of the controversial chemical dispersants being used by BP in an attempt to break up the slick.

One of the workers had to be evacuated by air ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment, another followed by boat and the other two were transported by ground, the statement added.

"No other personnel are reporting symptoms, but we are taking this (recall) action as an extreme safeguard," said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Robinson Cox.

"Mr Coast Guard, you're lying."

to protect the American people.

This whole affair is a massive indictment of Capitalism, the reckless drive for profits which initiated this tragedy, the craven relationship of government to capital that we see here. When is enough enough?
