Spain, Netherlands and EU to help US clean up oil spill
Brussels - Spain, the Netherlands and the European Union have offered equipment to help the United States clean up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the European Commission said Friday.

US authorities have been struggling for weeks to repair the damage provoked by a ruptured well from an off-shore BP platform, which the company is trying to close with the so-called "top kill" operation.

The EU's executive said that following a request received Thursday from the US Coast Guard, "three complete sets of rigid sweeping arms" - a specific type of skimmers that can be attached to a ship to recover oil - are expected to be lent to the United States for up to three months.

"We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our American friends as they work to deal with this environmental disaster," said the EU's Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva.

The commission said it is ready to ship the aid to Houston and/or New Orleans. The transport, handling and maintenance costs are to be borne out by a US contracted company, it specified.

5. Me too
Obama did say we didn't have the expertise.
So where the hell are these skimmers? And why weren't they here yesterday?

6. And not a moment too soon... errr uhhhh....
I hate to be a wet blanket... and I'm thoroughly grateful that SOMEONE has skimmers that can recover the crude...

BUT

WHY wasn't this request made A MONTH AGO?

8. The article says "following a request received Thursday"
Why wait?
Why wasn't this done immediately?
Why did the US Coast Guard make the request, not BP?

11. Again, they offered much earlier, were turned down, but now that Obama has finally
decided that BP isn't the sole "cure" the government has made a request.

10. They offered more than a month ago but were told they were not needed
because BP "would take care of it".

This is why so many of us wanted Obama, not BP, in charge to begin with!

9. Prediction: Obama will follow Bush's 9/11 lead and refuse help from allies. He has to.
Because if he accepts help, he'll be declared "weak" by the right-wing owned mainstream media.

And because he knows the so-called "Left" is too disorganized, weak, and ineffectual to offer him any protection from such attacks.

And so he is to become Bush 2. It was pre-ordained.

12. That already happened more than a month ago when Denmark and the UAE, among others
offered expertise and equipment.

14. I did not know that. What
news website do you use?

I come here to supplement my news aggregation, but it seems to me I have to visit about 27 websites a day just to get a full spectrum of news.
