WTF?

Every BP press release just buys them another couple of days.

Look for another statement on Sunday claiming that it'll all be over on the coming Tuesday.

What everyone is overlooking is that no one has ever tried to plug a leak this deep. And that's because BP convinced Congress that the possibility of a leak was so remote, investing time, money and effort in being prepared to prevent one was a waste.

Don't be the least be surprised if this is merely the tip of the iceberg (if you'll pardon the expression). I think they're all just spoonfeeding the bad news gradually.

6. According to industry bloggers, Top Kill has already failed. They've also tried a Junk Shot.

Now they're trying Top Kill after Junk Shot, and it's not going well. Being realistic here, it seems highly unlikely that they're going to get this thing under control. They're still trying to push the mud through, but the BOP is showing new cracks. The 60-70% possibility of success was really pulled out of BP's ass. Nothing like this has ever been tried in a situation with open cracks--let alone so far under water.

My big hope right now is that they don't bust this thing open more with the Junk Shots.

and that's Top Hat 2. They're going to cut off the riser so that the hat snugly fits. This will hopefully eliminate the hydrate problem. However in the diagram, there is an antifreeze component in the hat.

The riser is being cut off regardless either to install the top hat or to install a second BOP. It was noted this morning that the preps for the riser cut were being made by the robots.

8. The longer it takes, the bleaker it looks...

I would think, that with this method--the longer you don't have success, the
greater the likelihood is that this method will not succeed. If you keep
pumping and pumping mud (and junk) in--if this is going to work, you will know
it pretty quickly. Continuing to pump just shows that there is not enough
weight and pressure in this mud/junk to plug it up.

With that said, I wonder why there are so many media reports suggesting that
it was successful? I doubt BP is lying. If they're lying, we'll find out
within a few days. There seems to be a great deal of confusion.
