Paul: No citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants

Washington (CNN) - Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul is once again making waves, this time for saying he opposes citizenship for U.S. born children of undocumented immigrants.

In an interview posted Wednesday on RT.com, a Russian television station that broadcasts in English, Paul said he favors modifying current law.

"We are the only country I know of that allows people to come in illegally, have a baby, and then that baby becomes a citizen," Paul said. "And I think that should stop also."

Paul, a Tea Party movement favorite, captured the Kentucky GOP primary last week, defeating establishment candidate Trey Grayson. The 14th Amendment to the Constitution guarantees citizenship to individuals born in the United States, but Paul's position is not an unpopular one in Congress...

2. Kentucky might elect him
No offense to Kentucky DUers (I am not going to say KY-DU) but you have to admit, many of your neighbors would love to return to the antebellum days of slavery and indentured servitude.

3. The Fourteenth Amendment was passed
right asfter the Civil War.

The Thirteenth Amendment was passed to end slavery.

But southern states made it clear that freedmen would not be granted rights of citizenship.

So the Fourteenth Amendment was passed guaranteeing that freedmen were citizens of the states they were born in.

But then the southern states made racial laws for voting so the

Fifteenth Amendment was passed guaranteeing the right to vote to freedmen.

So the states created Grandfather Acts, poll taxes and literacy tests to keep freedmen from voting anyway until about the 1950's.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

In short, when the Fourteenth Amendment was passed, the guys voting for it really thought they were voting for freed slaves to get US citizenship.

5. He is not the originator of this idea

I've heard this argument made for a long time now. And while I'm sure I'll get flamed for it in this forum, frankly i think its worthy of discussion as a constitutional amendment. As long as at the same time we grant full citizenship to children born of US citizens but in foreign countries (which I think we do anyways).
