Salon: "In death, a child star's reduced to a scripted line that enraged him for most of his life"
Gary Coleman: Damned by a catchphrase
Even in death, the child star is reduced to the one scripted line that enraged him for most of his life Video
Heather Havrilesky

http://www.salon.com/news/gary_coleman/index.html?story=/ent/tv/heather_havrilesky/2010/05/28/gary_coleman_dies

Pray that your life's work won't someday be reduced to a single catchphrase. That's the moral that Gary Coleman leaves with us in the wake of his death by brain hemorrhage at the age of 42. As onlookers tweeted "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Jesus?" to each other, reminiscing about the "Diff'rent Strokes" star's one claim to eternal life, it's hard not to contemplate the purgatory of being assaulted by that one stilted, clownish phrase everywhere you go. Imagine hearing those same four words, written by some smart-ass writer you may never have met — hearing them over and over and over again. At the coffee joint, at the restaurant, at the hotel, there's that sound again, the sound of someone imitating your voice at age 10, the voice of an indignant child.

Now imagine that you've never lost the stature of a child, adding insult to injury. Imagine the rage that you'd feel, encountering that stupid catchphrase that has nothing at all to do with you — an adult, a real live human being, not a cartoon character.

It's no wonder Coleman seems to have spent a great deal of his time as an adult bouncing between depression and outrage. His health problems and financial struggles loomed in the background, sure, but Coleman himself was more than a little preoccupied with trying to do something pretty simple that proved to be impossible: scrape that stupid catchphrase out of his picture. For this, he appeared on VH1's "The Surreal Life" and other shows, hoping against hope that he could present a new human being, an adult, not a plucky, fictional adopted boy named Arnold, to the world.

Coleman had problems with anger. It's hard to imagine not struggling with anger, considering his circumstances. He appears to have spent the past 10 years appearing on reality TV shows, being interviewed on cheesy tabloid shows like "The Insider," and appearing in cheap commercial spots in which he's the brunt of the joke.

1. Child stardom has ruined so many lives.
It's so sad.

And Coleman's parents stole everything he made on that show.

5. if my kids turn out to have any show business talent and want to go into it
Edited on Fri May-28-10 05:36 PM by Ex Lurker
I'll give them every amateur opportunity--lessons, community theatre, civic orchestra, whatever. But they won't turn professional until at least age 18, and preferably not for a few years after that. Hollywood has been ruining child stars for over a hundred years.

7. First and still one of the most famously ruined lives was Jackie Cougan

Just look what his parents did to him.

The state of California has a law nicknamed after him.

2. Okay, not to make light of Coleman's death or anything
but geez, if I were remembered by a catch phrase, I think I'd be--y'know, okay with that. Because I'd be remembered.

Seems like that's what he wanted, but...

8. sounds like he didn't end up with much
there are supposed to be laws that require the money go into a trust fund, but like everything else, there are loopholes. Seems like most of these kids come from unstable family situations, which is why they get pushed into it at such an early age in the first place.

22. Last I saw, it kinda looked like Todd Bridges had turned his life around.
I mean, he's got issues still, but who among can throw stones for that? He seems to be drug free and working steadily as a d-list celebrity. That can't be easy work.

13. I really don't think either the catch phrase or his stature had much to do with his troubles.
I think his god awful abusive, thieving parents were the primary cause of his downfall.

17. Actually, whoever is out there yelling that "catchphrase"
doesn't even know what it was.

It was NOT "Whatchoo talking 'bout Jesus???"

It was "Whatchoo talking 'bout Willis???"

Carry on...

18. The whole catchphrase thing
Reminds me of another story - not as bad or long as this one, but just how things can catch on and make your life miserable.

Thomas Dolby's classic 80s song, "She Blinded Me with Science." The older gentleman in the video (and in the song) that routinely exclaimed, "Science," or the full phrase, was an actual respected scientist in England. When he came over to America for a conference, people kept coming up to him and yelling, "SCIENCE!"

38. Err
One might assume that "Whatchoo talkn' ' bout 'Jesus' " is a joke (maybe a poor one) playing on the fact that Mr. Coleman has passed away. I hope he found some measure of peace in his life before he did.

21. Gary Coleman's life gave me hope; he had the same kidney disease I do
He had FSGS, the same disease I have. The prognosis isn't good for patients with it, yet he survived it for at least 35 years despite his troubled life.

31. oh my gosh... wouldn't he have loved to know that
Actually, he probably did. I'm sure people with his condition contacted him and so he knew that he'd made a real difference in many lives. And even if he didn't know... it's a pretty touching demonstration of the way we can all touch others' lives and never know the effect we have.

I hope you're doing well.

33. I'm sure he had other things on his mind :-)
The disease is even less well understood than other kidney diseases and the prognosis is always bad (transplanted kidneys often start showing signs of the disease during the transplant surgery!). It has no predictable course and responds poorly to what little treatment there is ... So it was nice to see someone with it being alive!

I'm doing fine; holding steady at S3 (knock wood). Thanks!

27. Danny Bonaduce (another ruined ex-child star with an abusive father) once said:
"Being a child star is great. It's being a former child star that sucks. Most child actors were lucky enough to get the part in the first place. They cry and complain that now they are no longer little and cute, Hollywood has no use for them. What we often fail to appreciate is that being little and cute may have been their only skill."

Gary's story is supremely tragic in that he didn't ask for his health conditions or his stunted development or parents who wasted nearly all of his money. Who could blame him for being bitter that he was chewed up and spat out? Too many child actors relive this same story and it never changes.

1. You get a check for $1.3 million;
2. Everyone remembers you for a silly catchphrase.

I would certainly consider it.

36. I've never wanted fame.
I know several other people who don't want it either. I honestly don't know why anyone would. I would think that ten minutes in the line at the grocery store with nothing to look at but tabloids would cure most people of any desire to be famous. Of course, I would be wrong.
