yep, it is that time of year again, when most of us like to take a bike ride from time to time. No, most of us do not ride in bad weather or winter... I mean it is dangerous enough in the summer and in daylight.
1.- Be aware that you are sharing the road with cars... the laws of the road apply to the both of you. And realize most drivers don't know this, could not care, nor do they look for you. So be careful out there. Try to use bike lanes if available...
2.- If you are going to take a somewhat longish ride, do take with you some source of fast acting energy... goes double for a diabetic.... yes I forgot this today... no problem I stopped at the local taco shop and got my carbs that way. If you are a diabetic, carry your glucometer with you, and BE AWARE what the signs of low blood sugar are... yes I am right now finger waggling myself. Hey I got the food just as the shakes were hitting... so yes I am fine thank you, and at home. But it could have been quite dangerous.
3.- ALWAYS, ALWAYS pay attention to the road.
4.- Enjoy yourself, and remember this is a good exercise you are doing. It is also a good thing for the environment actually.
5.- Remember to drink water... I know this is something people usually forget, but take it with you and make sure you hydrate yourself.
6.- PACE yourself... it is easy to forget this, but if you go out a mile, you need to ride that same mile back. So pace yourself. This is not a marathon you are riding...
On a personal note today's ride was actually double my max a year ago... and I did fine... I guess I am in far better shape than I was even a year ago. Ah that elliptical is my friend.
Have a good one. Now cooling down, before I go to the shower...
