One Thing Is Clear
BP never had, and still don't have,a viable plan to fix this. So, how did they get the permit??? As long as corporations control our government, we are in grave peril. The SCOTUS have given them an ever greater means of control. What can we do? Ideas anyone?

1. And one of the biggest concerns I have about BP is the fact that instead

of doing there utmost to stop this gusher, they constantly look at how much it will cost them to do so.

Somebody needs (POTUS) to put some serious pressure on them to perform like it will cost them there lives if they fail.

5. It almost seems like they are prioritizing cost over effectiveness
in the order in which they are attempting to stem this while the relief drills are happening.

The 4" sippy straw in the 21" pipe is my favorite so far. :sarcasm:

2. How did they get the permit?
They sent cocaine and pizzas to MMS with some bullshit, madeup "plan", got rubber stamped and started drilling.

3. corporate control is perilous indeed - just think of the entire crisis
another set of billion-dollar-per-quarter profit makers that have been deregulated since Reagan and have had all restraints thrown in the Bushes by.. Bush*

As to what to do: bike/public transit/boycott if you can (brands have been named on DU) - it all starts with our absurd consumption of resources...

As for wrestling back against corporations (irresponsible ones) - as Randi syas - it's the media stupid. Way too consolidated.
That, and campaign finance reform + verifiable voting will go a long way.

6. We rarely do the job until an accident happens.
A guy was killed down at the end of the street - now it's a 4-way stop sign.

A teen was killed at an intersection a few miles from here, now there's a light there.

Oil tankers are now full double-hulled due to the Exxon Valdez spill (even though a full double-hull design would not have prevented the Exxon spill.)

Now all offshore oil drilling will probably be required to have a relief well dug. Blow-out preventers will be made nearly failure-proof and inspections and repairs will be required or operations will be shut down. Plans for blowouts will be required before a permit is given. Environmental reviews will be extended to 90 days so the MMS can stop granting waivers. Etc...
