CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan police and prosecutors are investigating the stabbing death of an American priest.

The Attorney General's Office says Father Esteban Woods was slain inside his apartment in the eastern city of Puerto Ordaz on Thursday. No arrests have been made.

Prosecutors say Woods suffered several knife wounds.

The prosecutor's office says Woods was a 68-year-old native of Vancouver, Washington, and served as a priest in Venezuela's Roman Catholic Church for 23 years

1. Sad,
Violent crime is out of control in Venezuela, and it has gotten worse under Chavez. That being said, I am not exactly a fan of the Church.

2. Must have been carrying an expensive pen
You know how it is. A friend's nephew, in his early 20's, was stabbed in the heart for his cell phone. The dummy stepped out of a party to get a phone call, was standing on the sidewalk and the robber just walked up, asked for his phone, and when the young man ignored him, took out a knife, stabbed him, took the phone, and walked away. As they say in Puerto Ordaz, crap happens.

3. It is like in Rio
You want to carry some money with you in case you are approached by a robber since some are known to retaliate if you have nothing to offer.

4. Meshuga, it is worse than Rio
Statistics show crime in Caracas is a lot higher than Rio de Janeiro. This crime took place in Puerto Cabello, a relatively small town due West of the city, on the coast - my guess is they have a lower crime rate than Caracas, where we've seen more than 50 murders in one weekend. Sometimes the morgue gets so full, a multitude of relatives stands outside waiting to identify the corpses, or take them away. It's bedlam.
