Cuba Has Worst Sugar Harvest Since 1905
Linda Young - AHN News Writer
Havana, Cuba (AHN) - Cuba's sugar harvest is 850,000 tons short of government expectations, making it the lowest harvest since 1905, according to the Communist Party daily Granma.

The nation once led the world in sugar exports, but critics say the sugar ministry has lacked objectivity in planning. During the 2008-2009 growing season, Cuba produced 1.4 million tons of sugar and earned $600 million from sugar exports.

A goal of 1.3 million tons was set for this year.

President Raul Castro fired the sugar minister earlier this week.

The amount of acres planted in sugar cane has steadily declined in Cuba in recent years. There are now 1.85 million acres planted with sugar cane, which is down from 4.9 million acres as recently as 2002.

Interesting. A communist country as a bad harvest and it is not blamed on drought.

1. They could follow Ramirez' lead and fake the data
Here in Venezuela the Oil minister, Ramirez, fakes the oil production data, inflating the numbers. I don't see why the Cubans can't do the same.

All they have to do is lie, say their harvest is 5 million tons, give lots of awards to the appropriate Revolutionary Vanguard workers, and build a giant statue of the guys, showing them musclebound as they attack the sugar fields full of communist spirits and singing "Patria O Muerte, Venceremos!" These guys are gigantic liars, they are really losing their touch.

7. My "fake" snipets are humorous, and if you can't take a joke....
But I don't think Ramirez is trying to joke when he posts fake oil production data. He's trying to cover up for his own incompetence. And in a nation where most of the national income comes from oil exports, such fakery is deadly. Why do you think we're suffering so much now? Why is our economy in stagflation, where are the missing dollars they need to prop up the currency? I think some of it is due to the fake nature of our oil production figures. Ramirez should be fired and punished, because what he's doing really undermines the country. And this has nothing to do with politics, whether one is pro-Chavez or anti-Chavez, it's not sensible to support something like this, where the nation heads towards a cliff because the oil minister is faking production figures, and the government thinks (or claims) it has income it really doesn't have.

3. Seems they have one big issue
They're ruled by old guys with bad ideas, who don't know how to give up power. It's time for EVOLUTION.

5. Evolution
That cuban singer gave a speech saying Cuba needed Revolution without the R, and they came down on him very hard. I forgot his name, but the guy seems to have been popular until he started asking for change. So the idea about "evolution" wasn't really mine. I think it's kind of funny to see these "Revolutionaries" so interested in preserving the status quo. I think the sugar harvest failure is a sign of how lousy their system works, and hopefully smart Cubans will have the fortitude to start forcing change on those dinosaurs.

8. I guess they will have less diabetes
One benefit for Cubans is their lack of sugar in the diet, which should reduce diabetes. In general, people who are skinny and near starvation lead longer lives. They aren't very happy about it, but they do live longer.
