Government to formalize indigenous languages in Panama
Panamá, miércoles 12 de mayo de 2010

The Subcommittee on Indigenous Affairs of the National Assembly is expected to close consultations on Bill No. 55 related to intercultural bilingual education.

The project aims at formalizing the languages and alphabets of the indigenous peoples of Panama, said a press release from the National Assembly.

Technical Adviser Philip Grechow announced that during the first week of June there will be a meeting of educators in Ñokribo, located in the Ngäbe Buglé region, to finalize said consultations.

The initiative, presented by Rep. Crecencia Prado, also seeks to prevent the extinction of native languages of indigenous peoples in the country, added Grechow.
