Cuba blends peas and coffee again in cost-saving move
Edited on Thu May-05-11 03:42 AM by dipsydoodle
Cuba is resuming mixing coffee with roasted peas in a bid to cope with rising international coffee prices, the authorities say.

The blend for domestic consumption will help cut costs, given that coffee prices had risen some 69% over the last year, the announcement said.

Cuba needs to import coffee as its own production, despite recent investment, cannot meet local demand.

Pea-blend was common in coffee-loving Cuba for many years.

You can still buy substitutes in the UK : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Coffee

1. Crazy, isn't it, that all the colonies were programmed to produce materials for export,
not for the use and enjoyment of the citizens living there?

All their agriculture was arranged to be sent to Europe, as it is throughout the Americas, and Africa when they were controlled by the countries which used up their own indigenous people as slaves before turning to imported slaves from Africa.

It would really be nice if things worked out so they could also acquire the means to produce as much coffee as they would like.
It doesn't always work out for island countries, sadly. That's what people who lived in Hawaii have told me over the years. It gets imported at a great cost.

Can't even imagine peas coffee.

2. gross, and many former colonies still export in great quantities
Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala with strong agricultural sectors. although other former colonies can't even produce enough coffee for domestic consumption let alone enough for export.

p.s. much of the best coffee in coffee regions goes for export. more money. what the locals drink is often poor quality. first I ever heard of peas though. yuck

3. I wondered what was in the coffee most Cubans drink
I would not get much "buzz" from it.

Once I figured that out I bought the good stuff, Cubita and another brand. It's not cheap, it makes for a good gift for Cubans.
