Buzz Aldrin vs. Neil Armstrong
Posted: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 4:01 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: White House

From NBC's Mark Murray and Scott Foster

In First Thoughts this morning, we noted how Neil Armstrong and a couple other NASA heroes wrote letters to NBC and the White House, criticizing the administration's plans to scuttle NASA's Constellation rocket program.

Now the White House has released a letter from another NASA luminary, Buzz Aldrin, that supports the administration's approach.

As an Apollo astronaut, I know full well the importance of always exploring new frontiers and tackling new challenges as we explore space. The simple truth is that we have already been to the Moon - some 40 years ago. What this nation needs in order to maintain its position as the 21st century leader in space exploration is a near-term focus on lowering the cost of access to space and on developing key, cutting-edge technologies that will take us further and faster - while expanding our opportunities for exploration along the way. The President's program will help us be in this endeavor for the long haul and will allow us to again push our boundaries to achieve new and challenging things beyond Earth. I believe that this is the right program at the right time, and I hope that NASA and our dedicated space community will embrace this new direction as much as I do. By so doing we can together continue to use space exploration to help drive prosperity and innovation right here on Earth.

1. They weren't always bff's during the Apollo program, either.
They even got in a fight once, iirc. :D

3. How can you not have the utmost respect for Neil Armstrong?
These guys (the moon walkers) are the most underrated explorers in history. And Neil just says fuck it all and goes off to live his own life.
I don't care what political affiliation the man applies to. He's earned his standing.

7. Agreed
And I am glad that we have educated opinions from both of the first two men to walk on the moon. I do find it especially interesting that Neil Armstrong has broken what can only be described as 'media silence' to speak up, while Buzz has always been a little more 'out there'. I have to say I was a bit perplexed by his doing "Dancing With the Stars", but he has the right to do any damn thing he pleases.

I'm lucky enough to be old enough to have witnessed that momentous event.

9. I stopped talking about this a long time ago
It seems that each time I was bringing some details and explanations, I was called "coocoo" and told all this had been debunked.

Including the video that shows the 3 astronauts faking being far away from the Earth when they were still in the suburbs, basically.

I'm done with this, it's amazing how well people have been brainwashed.

The bigger the lie...

13. I'm not going to call you crazy or anything...
I'm just going to ask you to explain these images to me:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/multimedia/lroimages/apollosites.html

Particularly the one were footpaths made by the astronauts to and from the LM are clearly visible. On the moon.

By the way scientists are still to this day bouncing lasers off the laser reflector panels set up by all 6 Apollo missions. There are now six somethings on the moon reflecting laser light, and those six somethings are located where NASA said its six LMs landed.

You don't need to be "smarter" than everyone.

Some people do know a few things and simply don't want to talk about it.

I tried at one time and realized it was absolutely impossible to get anyone to even question their belief.

I question mine often. But most people don't.

27. Hey for what it's worth
I sympathize with your position, even if I don't see things your way. You've taken a very unpopular view of something based on what you view as compelling evidence. That's the way an adversarial logical process works (e.g., the Devil's Advocate) and sometimes the contrarians end up being right. I think that's extremely unlikely in this case, but we never know.

I suppose the question will be answered when some future moon rover drives up to the Apollo 11 LM and films Neil Armstrong's footprints at the bottom of the descent ladder. Or not.

11. You're kidding, right?
remember, Apollo 11 occured during the Cold War. The US and USSR tried to one-up each other at everything. In fact, a week before Apollo 11 launched, the Soviets launched a lander to grab moon rocks and return before Buzz and Neil did just so they could at least claim to have retrieved the first samples from the moon. It crashed, which was bad media for them. Now, the Soviets were quite capable of tracking the telemetry of Apollo 11. Had we faked the landing they would have screamed bloody murder. It cannot be denied that we landed. Having said that, there was no upgrade in space suits between 11 and 15, so if the last 3 landings had the same equipment as the first 3, then what reason would we have for faking the first 3?

5. The jury still out on Mr. Obama's plans for NASA
Edited on Wed Apr-14-10 09:03 PM by political_Dem
Although not everything is revealed about what he plans to do, I continue to hope that we are able to continue space exploration that features the wonder of the past. Watching lift-offs and the travels of the Mars Rover has been the most relevant part for me whenever there is the chance to see coverage of NASA missions.

Until I hear more, I don't have a dog in this fight, yet.

Let go of the 60's Neil. They've been over for a long time.

Richard Branson has developed a plane(?) that can go into space via take-offs and landings (like an airplane), but Neil wants to continue takes offs using dangerous rocket boosters, and landings via dropping into the ocean. At some point, shouldn't we be progressing?!!

32. They both deserve respect and should be listened too...
As far as I am concerned, no matter their political persuasion, people like Neil Armstrong, Gene Cernan, Jim Lovell, Buzz Aldrin etal are all true heroes deserving of respect, and their views, particularly on the space program, should be taken seriously...

I am not as anxious as I was about Obama's shift in space policy, but Armstrong, Cernan and Lovell make a good point in their letter and I hope NASA takes their views seriously...

Gene Cernan's book , and excellently narrated by him in the audiobook version, is one of my favorites on the subject.

And watching Neil's landing was one of my earliest memories (2 1/2yrs) mostly I think because of the emotions of the crowd I was in (a hotel lobby)

40. Good call, Freedom.
Saw a documentary the other night on the moon walkers. Gene Cernan came across as the expert on the whole deal. Called the guys from Apollo 13 the true heroes of the whole mission. Alan Bean. Kind of a flaky artist. Charlie Duke found religion. Just fascinating to see how they've turned out. No Neil. I guess he wanted no part of it. That's cool.
