Just found out my son's highschool has started blasting Fox on big screen TVs at lunchtime
Also they are on in the common's area as the kids come into school in the morning.

My son told me there are a total of three big screen TVs that are on FOX ALL THE TIME (Sorry about the caps, but DAMN!).

I am absolutely boiling!

I don't really have a problem with the TVs at lunch but this is school. What about the History Channel, or Nat Geo, or the Science channel?

Go to school. Change the station.
Deal with the administration. So many parents are afraid to enter a public school. Do it-you might be surprised at what happens. Said in support and friendship. :)

Fox propaganda has no place in a school.

In fact, neither does CNN or MSNBC.

If that doesn't work.... work your way up the political food chain.

I have a feeling Houston's new mayor and administration might be sympathetic to your gripe.

Fox is not news, it's propaganda. It should not be on in school. I agree with you about the History Channel, National Geographic, etc., being on as they are educational.

5. Pitch a huge enormous fit.
First off, there's NO NEED WHATSOEVER for TVs to be on at school other than to watch some specific show or program or video that's pertinent to a specific class. Or some major event is happening that the kids ought to see.

I'm appalled that there are big screen TVs anywhere in the school, but that's just me.

We do not need big screen TVs being blared on any channel during school - unless it is a specific educational program that is planned. this is beyond ridiculous.

Do they have more big screen tvs then when they had the old style? Those suckers are more expensive than the old style too.

Back when I was in school teachers in my school had to schedule the use of them from the a-v department.

46. My son told me this in passing. It was an afterthought to some other unrelated conversation.
He told me that nobody even pays attention to the TVs, which I have an easy time believing. But, who knows what happens in the background subconscious?

My ex (he lives with his mom now), although she is a progressive, told me that she doesn't think it even matters to kids. I ask my son what he and his friends thought of it and his response was a big shrug (there is of course the "shrug" aspect of all teenagers).

I don't honestly know if it does influence the kids, and like my ex told me, for some of the kids it probably is a seamless transition from home TVs.

But I still can't help, for all these considerations, but be pissed off royally.

Much less on a partisan news station.

Look, lunch should be a time for kids to socialize and talk. Set the example, schools: TURN OFF THE TVs. They have no place in a school except for special occasions when something of national import is happening that they can learn from. (I remember watching Eisenhower's inauguration on the gym floor when I was in 1st grade.)

you think after absorbing 30 minutes of whatever, they
can instantly clear the mind and focus on what the teacher
is teaching?

Schools in countries like Japan, Russia, Germany, India & China do
not have any TV's, and they have dress codes & school uniforms.
And yes they are outscoring our students.

57. This policy of Fox's, giving away TVs as long as they're tuned...
...to the Fox "News" channel, seems to me like the action of a monopoly. At any rate, it certainly is a commercial venture; if Newscorp can defend this at all, it is as a marketing scheme. And that's commerce, interstate commerce in fact, and government has the power to regulate it.

They're hiding behind freedom of the press to build the most powerful propaganda machine the world has ever seen, and a virtual monopoly on news at the same time. This isn't freedom. This is commerce. Time to regulate Fox's bushy tail.

84. Actually, it sounds North Korean
If you buy a TV set or a radio in North Korea, it is built so that it tunes in only the government channels. North Koreans can't tune in South Korean TV or radio because their sets aren't built to receive those frequencies.

I have to put up with TVs in banks, restaurants, dentist offices, malls, social service buildings, tire repair shops,... I am disgusted by TVs in public... and I used to think radios on everywhere was bad...

they can do it on their iPod's. I don't want to see it.

Everyone is getting their two minutes hate, and I don't want it.

68. Actually, it might be good. Kids associate boredom with school.
Therefore, since boring school shows boring stuff, FOX News must be boring.

Just kidding. Get that SHIT outta of our public schools.

But the fact remains that kids ignore a lot of crap schools try to inculcate in them.

first of all, i don't think ANY tv should be blaring at the school, but you really need to do something about FOX news blaring at the high school.
I am certain you are not the only parent who would be disturbed if they knew..

to the rest of you parents out there; are they blaring TV at YOUR kid's school too??

81. Imo, since it's school it shouldn't be on any of the so called news channels
No Fox, CNN, MSNBC or any of them. CSPAN is more educational and neutral. The discovery channel or animal planet are educational too. If I were you, I would complain and get some of the other parents to call in too. I wouldn't want them to change to CNN either because the republican kids will complain to their parents. If it's on any of the other channels I mentioned, I don't think the kids would complain about it.

89. Take your complaints
first to the principal/s, then to the school board.

Be respectful, but persistent. It's more effective.

If my school wanted to air FOX news in the cafeteria, I'd be the first to step up and insist on PBS, which would not expose them to (much) advertising.

98. Complain,Complain,get parents who feel like you and Complain
You must remember we have people believing that the President has done some kind of indoctrination on the youth of this country. He was even compared to a german leader who recruited the young to do his dirty work (H----r). this is something that came from faux tv. The blaring noise and repetitiveness is a form of subliminal suggestion. Done all the time.Example commercials.

100. Why are there big screen TV's in a school building, anyway?
Schools are NOT bars! Schools are NOT motels!

I think it's absurd that my credit union has one in the lobby, I never can understand why people need a television in a place of work or study.

Next thing you know, someone will put them in the churches !!! Oh wait, I think some of THOSE have them too!

What is this love affair with big screen TV's ?
