Obama to sell financial overhaul to country

The White House announces that President Obama will travel in support of his financial reform legislation
By Associated Press

President Barack Obama is preparing to travel outside Washington in the coming weeks to sell his proposal for financial regulatory reform to the country.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage announced the trip Sunday as Obama steps up his lobbying efforts in support of new rules for Wall Street. A showdown with Republicans on legislation in the Senate is expected later this month.

Details on the timing and location of Obama's trip are not available.

Obama has been casting the issue as a choice for lawmakers between siding with American people and what he calls special interests. Getting the public on his side could help pressure Republicans who are lining up against the bill. They say it creates more problems than it solves.

1. Why do I have a bad feeling about this?
I know we have the truth on our side, but when is the last time that mattered?

2. I don't. I bet crowds come out to hear his message, AND he'll get
a lot of coverage. He usually does very well on the road. And the rethugs don't have a leg to stand on.

3. Why bad feeling? It's good that he's going out there. That's what saved HCR and
that's what going to win this one.

8. Nah, and the SEC going after Sachs will be a BIG help.
It just became EVEN HARDER for the GOP to defend the poor, pitiful banks. ;)

10. They don't seem too worried about that
And the way they made HCR unpopular, they could do the same with the latest round of Luntz talking points.

4. Good. This will help and I think they will have the votes.. This issue is hard to demonize..
Even George Will said on "This Week" this morning a financial reform bill will likely pass in the Seante with 60-70 votes.

5. That's the question, isn't it? If something can
be "demonized"? Fortunately, the majority didn't fall for their demonizing Health Care Reform.

9. Genuine reform is an easy sell -- stop working with the extremists in Congress and satisfy the base
if genuine reform is the goal moderate Republicans and Democrats don't need selling.

12. this is how we hold onto seats in Nov
the Republicans will stonewall, bills will be re-written numerous times, and by late summer Obama will turn up the heat. The republicans will either have to vote against financial form and explain that one to their constituents, or vote with Obama, giving him another victory.

this is exactly where we want to be.

13. Let him start kicking their assess!
Enough 'bipartisan!' Prez O's the one to cut thru all the crap, show the people that 'they' don't care one bit about us.
