UnitedHealth to Speed Coverage of Young Adults

BY AVERY JOHNSON

UnitedHealth Group Inc. plans on Monday to allow graduating college seniors to stay on their parents' health plans, getting out ahead of a provision of the federal health overhaul package that will go into effect in September.

4. Great. Fuck all the 23-26 year olds whose parents don't have insurance
--or who can't afford to add them.

Class-tiered health care: morally repugnant and fiscally bankrupt.

5. Question: can my college grad kid who was dropped
Be put back on my insurance when the new law kicks in or does the new law only allow kids to STAY on their parents' insurance? I had to drop my daughter last May when she graduated.I have Aetna.

9. If they change the plan rules, they will probably have a "special enrollment event"
that will allow you to add her back on.

If you have your insurance through work, contact HR and have them do some research for you.

Otherwise, call the Aetna number on your insurance card directly.

Good luck.

6. Good news but UHC doesn't merit accolades
for doing this. It's a "no-brainer."

The vast majority of young people are healthy, thus cheap to insure.

It also saves UHC money. It would be expensive to dump them in the spring and then have to re-add them in September.

Bet the savings won't show up in any decreases in premiums, though. They'll go toward executive bonuses.

Extending coverage to one of the cheapest groups to insure before they're required to is not a good well gesture.

Sometimes I regret that I dropped my UHG stock (except for a couple shares so I still get to vote at the shareholder's meeting. If the board recommends a "yes" vote - I vote "no" and vice versa).
