Arizona passes Birther Law, takes early lead in "Dumbest State of the Year" competition

by MinistryOfTruth

I wonder when the Arizona State legislature will change the state nickname from "The Grand Canyon State" to "The Orly Taitz State"?

The Arizona House on Monday voted for a provision that would require President Barack Obama to show his birth certificate if he hopes to be on the state’s ballot when he runs for reelection. The House voted 31-22 to add the provision to a separate bill. The measure still faces a formal vote.

It would require U.S. presidential candidates who want to appear on the ballot in Arizona to submit documents proving they meet the constitutional requirements to be president. Phoenix Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema said the bill is one of several measures that are making Arizona "the laughing stock of the nation." Mesa Republican Rep. Cecil Ash said he has no reason to doubt Obama’s citizenship but supports the measure because it could help end doubt.

thinkprogress.org

Seriously, how can America survive when the majority of entire State Legislatures are this stupid?

For even more mavericky Arizona FAIL check out alpolitics' diary McCain Hopes New Law Doesn't Lead to Racial Profiling - on this same subject, which Rachel Maddow tonight described as the most "retro-gressive, mean spirited" law in a looong time.

Did the Arizona State bird just become the Orly Owl or what?

Arizona legislature demands immigrants and President of the United States verify their status.

Just a few days after Arizona lawmakers passed an immigration law that will essentially require anyone who is or looks like an immigrant to carry their proof of residency at all times, the Arizona House voted for a provision that would require President Barack Obama to show his birth certificate and prove his own citizenship status.

thinkprogress.org

Yes, looking like an immigrant is about to become a potentially criminal act in Arizona, a state that ironically prides itself on it's libertarian streak that defends civil liberties, or something. I guess that only counts if you don't look wrong.

1. Whatever. The Georgia legislature is still in session so there is still time for us!
:)

On a serious note, can we give Arizona back to Mexico? If we sweeten the pot with something, maybe they'll take it.

A measure to force Obama to address citizenship in 2012
2:45 pm April 21, 2010, by Jim Galloway

State Rep. Mark Hatfield (R-Waycross) has just introduced legislation that would require Barack Obama – should he run for re-election – to provide proof of his citizenship before being granted a spot on the 2012 Georgia presidential primary ballot.

The state of Hawaii, of course, has already declared the matter of Obama’s birth proven — and closed.

The new measure stands no chance of passage in the final three days of the current session, but is an indication of what could come next January.

7. This is similar to the Swift Liar tactic:
create doubt through repetition. No matter how much evidence is presented or how often, it isn't enough. Addressing the bogus claim makes it legitimate to the skeptics. It's amazing that people will buy into a bogus claim simply because it's made and repeated. There is nothing that the President can do to stop these people from pushing this bogus claim. Presenting his birth cerficate will simply be met with the claim that it's fake. More idiots buy into it because it's out there.

9. Exactly...
the cry will be, "It's a forgery!!11!"

This happens all the time, people refuse to believe the truth, simply because they would have to face the fact they were wrong. Happens a lot in politics and religion.

I know of one individual that swears, an egg and a sperm each hold half a soul...it is the desperation to justify a belief that drives these people. Rational thought is not part of the equation.

39. here ill sing you on i think is pretty
The summer wind, came blowin' in - from across the sea
It lingered there, to touch your hair- and walk with me
All summer long, we sang a song - and then we strolled that golden sand
Two sweethearts, and the summer wind

Like painted kites, those days and nights - they went flyin' by
The world was new, beneath a blue - umbrella sky
Then softer than, a piper man - one day it called to you
And I lost you, i lost you to the summer wind

The autumn wind, and the winter winds - they have come and gone
And still the days, those lonely days - they go on and on
And guess who sighs his lullabies - through nights that never end
My fickle friend, the summer wind

the summer wind
warm summer wind
mmm the summer wind

this is the song i hear franky singing as the crown is taken from floridas brow and superglued onto arizona
farewell glory
alas
the golden days were gone before we noticed the gleam
sigh

35. As far as I could tell, McCain is a citizen but not a natural born citizen
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 04:42 PM by DeschutesRiver
He was born in the Panama Canal zone and was not granted citizenship at his birth. A law was enacted subsequently, and retroactively made children born there in a certain time period "citizens" of the USA. But the argument which claims McCain is ineligble to run for POTUS is that the law that made him a citizen after the fact of his birth outside the USA does not in any way confer the status to him of "natural born citizen".

I read a bit about this during the election, and there is at least a plausible argument that McCain was ineligble to run for POTUS. The was enough deep concern that the Senate created a nonbinding resolution declaring that no matter the facts, McCain should be considered eligible. Which doesn't amount to a hill of beans legally, but does show that it was an issue. Far bigger than Obama's birth certificate.

Obama has what he needs in terms of a birth certificate, and there has never been any real issue regarding his eligibilty. McCain has a birth certificate too, but since he wasn't a natural born citizen, he is the one people should have gone after re legitimacy of eligibility. Given the facts, it was a complete farce to be going after Obama, where there isn't doubt, and ignoring McCain, who probably was what they claimed Obama to be - foreign born, ie not a natural born USA citizen, whose citizenship was given to him later by a subsequently passed law.

If Obama had McCain's factual issues, ie actual birth certificate that showed him born in a foreign country and citizenship granted only later by law, it would have spelled the end of his candidacy, merely because he was the black guy running for office - I mean, look at how they are still going after him, despite his birth certificate that should end all debate on this. McCain skated on his real issues simply because he is a white man. A foreign born, not naturally born white citizen named John McCain is allowed to skirt the eligbility law for no other reason than the color of his skin not being objectionable to birther types.

Here is a link to a NYT article back in 2008:

The Zone, the last vestige of American colonial possessions, was considered American soil. He and I are eligible for the position. This has been settled, us Zonians should not be disenfranchised. Screw my homeboy McCain.

41. If it had been "settled" and people born in the zone were always considered citizens, then
there would have been no need for the retroactive law to give people born in the zone citizenship.

I believe America has always had "possessions" that didn't automatically confer citizenship on those who were born there. This is just one example. There is an argument that while it has been rectified now by a retroactive law, no one born there prior to that law could be considered a natural born citizen. In fact, the argument against McCain's eligibility isn't about citizenship, it is about the meaning of "natural born" citizen.

Who knows if it is a winning argument, but it is a plausible one that I don't believe has been answered yet.

43. Amen fifty times to your last paragraph
Says it all.

I researched it a little bit and figured that if Obama's BC were needed, then so was McCain's and one of his parents, since his citizenship depended on at least one parent being a U.S. citizen. Funny how no one ever demanded to see an American BC from either Papa or Mama McCain? Without that, there's no documentation that McCain is a citizen.
