Slow Down - Start Over - And Kiss My Ass
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 09:18 PM by NanceGreggs
TO: Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

Sir:

Just as on the Recovery Act and Healthcare Reform, you and your party colleagues are now echoing the same mantra in respect of Wall Street Reform: “Let’s slow down and start over.”

I hope you appreciate that millions of Americans wish on a daily basis that it was possible to go back and start over – not with respect to the present initiatives of our President, but with respect to where we, as a nation, now find ourselves.

Many of us wish we could go back to November 2000, and slow down and start over. We can’t help but wonder how much better off we would all be now, had Al Gore been given his rightful role as president; had the powers-that-be in your party, sir, cried, “Let’s slow down and get this process right, and ensure that the will of the People is not circumvented through courtroom theatrics, nor a Supreme Court selection of our next president.” But you didn’t say that, sir.

We wish we could go back to the early days of the Bush administration, and hear you and your colleagues admonish the president to slow down and start over and heed the warnings of intelligence agents who predicted an imminent catastrophic event on our soil. We can only wonder if the attacks of 9-11 could have been avoided had you, or anyone of influence in your party, cautioned the buffoon you foisted on a nation to spend less time “clearing brush” and more time listening to those around him who knew whereof they spoke. But you didn’t do that, sir.

We wish we could go back to the lead-up of the invasion of Iraq, and witness you and your party members telling the aforementioned buffoon to “slow down and start over” before declaring that non-existent WMDs justified a call to war – a war which has resulted in ten of thousands of casualties among our troops, as well as innocent Iraqi civilians. But you never opened your mouth in that regard, sir.

We wish we could go back to the appointment of an inexperienced political crony as the head of FEMA, and applaud you and your cohorts as you railed against the idiocy of such a move. We will never know how many of our fellow citizens could have been saved – could have been spared the nightmare of watching their neighbors suffer and die as a result of such an irresponsible appointment. But you and yours were silent on the topic, sir.

We wish we could go back and listen, truly awestruck and of one mind, as you and your fellow GOPers railed incessantly against the lack of oversight of our financial institutions, along with the agencies that protect our environment, our food, the products we purchase, the toys we give our children. Again, sir, you and your political ilk never opened your mouths.

Yes, Mr. McConnell, a lot of us wish we could slow down and start over. We will always wonder how many of our troops, now dead in Iraq, would be living out their lives with their loved ones; how many Iraqi children would not be limbless orphans; how many NOLA residents would have survived; how many tortured innocents will now wage war against us; how many forests and waterways could have been saved from pollution; how many Americans would not be losing their homes; how many US citizens would still have their jobs; how many people would still have faith in a country that you and yours allowed to become the living embodiment of greed-is-good, war-is-everything, oversight-is-detrimental to the bottom line.

Yes, sir, we will wonder – and we will ponder the repercussions of your silence, your willful inability to say “let’s slow down and start over” when it actually mattered.

How sad – and extremely telling – that you and your party members suddenly find your voice, a voice now raised in faux concern.

A policy to advance financial recovery from the debacle you and your cronies contributed to? Let’s slow down and start over.

A policy to provide Americans with access to affordable healthcare? Let’s slow down and start over.

A policy to curb the excesses of the greedy who bilk American citizens in order to reward themselves with multi-million dollar bonuses? Let’s slow down and start over.

Mr. McConnell, with all due respect – and the respect that is due you is nil – you and your party have become as laughable as you are abhorrent.

Let’s slow down and start over indeed. Let’s rethink, revamp, revisit anything that even remotely sounds like it could be a step in the right direction; anything that puts power back into the hands of the citizenry who rightfully own it; anything that moves this country forward and out of the vast wasteland you and your party have created.

In closing, sir, I would just add this – in case you are, as I strongly suspect, too arrogant to read between all-too-obvious lines: You, and those who support your “let’s start over” diatribes, disgust me.

And I am not alone in that disgust.

Yours Truly,
Nance Greggs

13. That's a kinder description of him than I would have come up with too
you and I are similar ages....it really has been a sad and confusing, not to mention sickening spectacle to see what the republican party has degenerated into over the years. I'm lucky compared to (apparently ) many other DUers who had or have right wingers in their families. I come from a tradition of Jewish liberals; republican was more or less a dirty word as I was growing up, yet there were ( and we freely acknowledged this) many decent republicans once upon a time, and really not so terribly long ago. Even liberal, and moderate republicans... And even many of the conservatives were decent enough people that supported bad political policies. I still have trouble wrapping my head around what they've become. ( and equally dismayed by the milquetoast rolling over in front of them that I've seen from my party WAY too often since Ray-Guns)...And being a natural born pessimist ( a horrible legacy of being born a Cub fan), I fear greatly for the survival of the U.S. as I grew up to understand it to be, because of the intensity and extreme embrace of hate and of flat out ignorance by these people and the willingness; hell eagerness, of their leaders to pander to the very worst of it.

15. I agree with you
I, too, remember reasonable and realistic people who had an "R" after their names. They appear to have gone the way of the dodo bird. And like you, I'm concerned about our future. The stridency, the anger, the nonstop lying ...

My son (who is in his early 20s) can't believe that once upon a time his mother was a registered Independent and considered a moderate on the political spectrum. The right has gone so FAR to the right that his moderate mother is now perceived as left-wing. And that is scary.

I wish we could "slow down and start over" on TWO tax cuts for the wealthy that squandered, along with a war of choice, a budget SURPLUS inherited by Bush and was a BIG part of the budget deficit that the right is whining about now.

Darn fine rant.

They are so damnably predictable with their lies, their talking points, and everything else they spew these days. They don't give a flying fig about this country; they never have! And they are willing to stand by and watch it die, just so they can say "We won!" Yeah? Really? And what will you Re pubs have won? A broken country, that even some of the folks who currently follow you might wake up to, and wonder why in the world they thought you were the ones for the job.

We ELECTED this president. They can keep dreaming that he's not really the democratically elected leader - but he won in a massive LANDSLIDE. Mr B*sh was selected in 2000 and, only "won" again because of Ohio vote "counting" procedures that were tabulated with the very SAME servers that the RNC and White House used in a bank's basement in Tennessee! Yeah, nothing wrong there!!

McConnell and the rest of his motley crew of stooges that can't stand each other (because they can't stand themselves), need to go give their rag tag Republicon Party an enema - 'cuz they're nothing but sh*t!

37. Slow Down, Start Over - It's all about my three-legged dog!
It's called the three-legged dog principle. I heard about this at a Democracy for America training session last weekend. First, you pick a catch-phrase, buzzword, what have you. Then, you keep repeating it, no matter what the conversation is about.

Example:

Let's discuss the deficit problem.

Fine, the problem here is my three-legged dog.

Huh? OK, what about the big tax cuts that were given to the rich by Bush?

You don't understand - the problem is that my dog only has three legs.

Could we have a serious discussion?

As soon as you address the question of my poor, three-legged dog.

Get the picture? Pick a catch phrase, just keep repeating it. The Republicans are good at this. Party discipline keeps them on message, even if the message doesn't make sense (When was the last time you heard a Republican making sense?).

45. Excellent Post!!!
I've been really disgusted with their stalling tactics and demands for "starting over" especially because- as you correctly point out- they sure as hell didn't slow down let alone start over on anything that THEY wanted to do during the last eight years. Bush's rushed decision to invade/occupy Iraq was particularly aggravating because there were UN weapons inspectors ON THE GROUND in Iraq and could've easily finished their work in a few more months and been able to report that Iraq did NOT have any proscribed weapons (which is what they had been telling everybody during their ongoing investigation). Of course, I'm not even sure if that would've made a difference since Bush, Cheney, et. al did everything they could to discredit the UN weapons inspectors, which just proves to me that they didn't actually care whether or not there really were WMD in Iraq but that they really just wanted to "get their war on" and their acquiescence to weapons inspections was really nothing more than a "PR move" to try to help encourage reluctant members of Congress to vote for the IWR. It worked, unfortunately.

58. Against the law................
And we've seen too many terrorists use this tactic - but................

I wish we could take Bitch McConnell (Turtle-man), sit him down, tie him to the chair, and READ this entire rant to him, PAUSING to demand he respond to each point - and, of course,

FILM IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We could sent it to the MSM in a brown envelope and they'd play it before they would ever realize that they've actually performed a public service.

Nanc, you've brought out the "bad" in me - I love it!

Great stuff!

62. Great op
Blessings to you and yours.Mitch McConnell is a lying piece of rotten s--t. Tell him let's start over and find out about the donation from Toyota that totaled almost one million dollars that was donated to the McConnell Foundation. Which we haven't found out what their philanthropic platform is.

66. Let me try putting it another way.
It is all well and good to wave the red flag of rage regarding the Republicans.

The true challenge facing is NOW is how to work for the ideals we claimed to believe in before the Democrats were returned to power.

The FACT is that the wars continue under the present administration and congress.

The FACT is that expanded drilling for oil had=s been embraced by the current administration.

There are many issues where current policy either echoes or expands upon prior Repuke policy.

What is to be done?

That is a harder question to both ask and find answers for.

It's not so easy to stir up the troops by raising "inconvenient truths."

But it is something that we are obliged to do, if our principles mean anything.
