Obama: Begin work this year on immigration reform

By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Wednesday he wants to begin work this year on legislation overhauling the nation's immigration system, firming up his commitment on a key priority for Latino voters and lawmakers.

Obama's comments at a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the White House reaffirmed his long-held support for immigration reform. He went a step further than he has in the past by calling for the work to begin this year.

Latino groups have been calling for Obama to deliver on his campaign promise of making immigration reform a top priority, with some activists and lawmakers in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus complaining he wasn't doing enough.

3. Looks like they know a winning issue when they see one
There is no reason on earth why Hispanic voters shouldn't vote Republican. Hispanic voters tend to be religious, conservative, and pro-family. But who wants to vote for someone who insults you? Who wants to vote for someone who wants to turn your name into a curse word?

I am married to a white man from Alabama, who served during the first Gulf War. One of the people I work with is a military brat who works as VP of finance and who is from Oklahoma. He's also a Vietnam vet. Both of these men are prime Republican voters, yet both have told me they will never vote for another Republican again. Now, I've got my husband voting and donating to the Dems. I haven't got my work buddy reliably donating yet, but he did vote for Obama and he's planning on voting in the Dem primary for our governor. The Republicans are turning off more voters than they can create.

4. Yes. They want to keep their teabagging base but are turning others off.
Hey, what is unintelligent for them is good for Dems.
