Nice try boys! "Poll deflates "Obama's Katrina" meme"
Poll deflates "Obama's Katrina" meme
Yes, it's Rasmussen, but this is worth a look, since it's the first effort I've seen to gauge the public's perception of Obama's handling of the Gulf spill:

How do you rate President Obama's response to the major oil leak off Lousiana's coast -- excellent, good, fair or poor?

20% Excellent

23% Good

28% Fair

26% Poor

Given that barely more than a fourth say Obama's response was "poor," it would be hard to argue that the "Obama's Katrina" meme has gained any traction. That may explain why Rasmussen buried that finding and didn't trumpet it in any headline.

1. true, but it's still sad that if split
by the good (excellent + good) and the bad (fair + poor) that there's a slight negative bias here when in fact I don't see this as his fault at all.

2. Why would you split it? Fair means 'acceptable' or 'average'.
The only negative response is poor.

3. Split for the purpose of diluting the positive,
and accentuating the negative.....as always.
That's what they do.

4. I agree with you
but if it's a scale from 1-4 with 1 being the worst and 4 being the best, that split is a fairly normal way to look at the statistics, and in some cases a "fair" rating is not considered to be very good, linguistics aside. My point simply being that it bothers me that the lower half of the scale (the 1s and 2s) are slightly larger than the upper half, which to me shows that the meme is working at least a little and that we need to fight back against it more strongly.

5. Fair is neither excellent nor is it poor......
and as we could suspect, it may be the answer of those who are not aware of what he has done
to make a terrible horrible situation technically out of his control to any great degree
a tiny bit better.

It may also be the answer of those who don't support this President,
but can't think of anything he's actually done to screw it up,
so Fair is the best that their conscience would muster.

As for those answering in the negative, I believe that I have seen this percentage before...
in fact, I see it quite often.

7. That Number....
I've basically written of 25% of my Fellow Citizens as a gaggle of mouth-breathing nincompoops who, if Obama were to cure cancer, would complain that Obama has "devastated the hospice industry."

Based on the numbers from this poll, virtually nobody in America with a functioning cerebral cortex thinks that Obama has done a poor job of responding to the oil rig disaster. Of what's left, about a third of normal people believe that Obama has responded in a Fair (read: Reasonably Competent) manner and fully two-thirds think he's exceeding their expectations.

Good Job, Mr. President!

8. I'm not arguing that it's not neutral
I'm just saying that if the scale is a 4 point scale/rating system that fair is on the lower half of the spectrum. And sadly, I agree 100% with your assessment of the bottom quarter who would hate Obama no matter what he does. My point is simply one of the way people view any scale of answers, and that the right could still exploit this number to make it look worse than it is.

10. The administration has been on this from the get-go. There's a timeline at...
whitehouse.gov to prove it. I've seen DU'ers actually go with the M$M meme that the administration's response was inept. I don't mind people having varying opinions, but you can't have your own set of facts.

12. Rasmussen sucks, and so does Fox
* Fox polls "Obama's Katrina," gets wrong answer: Despite the right's ongoing attacks, the new Fox poll finds that 50% approve of "how the Obama administration is dealing with the oil spill in the gulf coast." Only 29% disapprove.

13. Since 25% will hear Obama's name and say "POOR!" before the question is finished
This is a pretty good result.
