Polls Close in UK! Exit polls predict hung parliament with Conservatives at 307 seats.
Edited on Thu May-06-10 04:06 PM by flpoljunkie
BREAKING NEWS: Exit poll for BBC, Sky and ITV News predicts a hung parliament with the Conservatives the largest party. The poll puts the Conservatives on 307 seats, Labour on 255, the Liberal Democrats on 59 and others on 29.

One of the BBC announcers just said it was possible that Labor could form a coalition with the Liberal Dems if their combined votes were strronger than the exit polls are predicting.

1. "Others"
Anybody know the breakdown? Could Labour form a coalition with LibDems and, say, the Northern Irish SDLP, Scottish Nationalists, etc, or are most of the others from rightist/unionist parties?

2. Labor could form a coalition with Lib Dems. It takes 326 votes for a majority.
Edited on Thu May-06-10 04:21 PM by flpoljunkie
Although, they would still be short of the 326 required.

And, when there is a hung parliament, the party in power, the Labor party, has the first chance to form a government.

11. That would keep Gordon Brown as PM, right?
I know very little about British politics.

18. You are correct. In UK if there is no majority the PM has first bite of the apple.

In many other parlimentary countries the head of the largest party normally is given the courtesy of first bite of the apple in trying to form a coalition.

3. There's a longer list here. Still an Others category and no numbers yet,
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/election2010/results/

I wonder if others is mostly write-ins or independents?

4. My opinion.

The DUP will sell themselves to the highest bidder. Labour have said for their support, they will keep NIs 10billion grant to ensure it sees no cuts. The UUP, whom the conservatives aligned themselves with will get 1 seat at the most, but its very likely they will get none. The SDLP will have a few seats - probably around 3, and they will side with Labour. If it is as close as these exit polls suggest, then the DUP support could end up being vital, and they will no doubt go into mercenary mode and have a list of demands.

I dont know much about the Scottish/Welsh parties, but Im sure SNP/Plaid would most likely side with Labour/LibDems also, ahead of the conservative party.

A prominent Labour MP said what the LibDems want (about voting reform being needed) just after the exit poll came out, so I took that as a big red light as in they would go on board with one of the LibDems major requests if they were to be in a coalition.

9. Just heard on the BBC live stream that results might be contested
Some people were not able to vote and there might be a challenge over that.

15. Exit polls are likely fucked
Most observers say the Lib Dems will probably do much better than what the exit poll is telling them.

There are precedents for UK exit pollings being grossly wrong - '87, '92, etc. Especially in a 3-way race, it can be very difficult to get right.
