WHEN THE ECONOMY INTERFERES WITH AN ELECTION STRATEGY....
WHEN THE ECONOMY INTERFERES WITH AN ELECTION STRATEGY....

Roll Call reports today on the latest challenge facing congressional Republicans: what to do about good news.

It's a quandary for House Republicans: How do you talk about the best job growth in four years when your mantra has been, "Where are the jobs?"

Riding high and hopeful that they can retake the House in the fall, GOP leaders so far are largely sticking to last year's playbook despite last week's jobs report showing 290,000 jobs were added in April and 573,000 so far this year.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) even used the "Where are the jobs?" line in a seeming non sequitur last week reacting to the jobs report.

That was odd, wasn't it? The disconnect makes it seem as if GOP talking points are lacking in flexibility, unable to adapt to changing circumstances. When the economy was losing jobs every month, Boehner would say, "Where are the jobs?" Now that the economy has added more than 200,000 jobs in two consecutive months for the first time in four years, Boehner is still saying, "Where are the jobs?" It suggests the would-be Speaker isn't paying attention to current events very well.

As Rachel Maddow put it the other day, "Dude, they're right here. What a weird thing to say."

In the bigger picture, of course, the problem isn't rhetorical. Republicans are counting on a weak economy to produce electoral gains on Election Day. But if the economy isn't especially weak anymore?

"While positive signs are good news, and we expect our economy will recover, it will be because of the hard work and entrepreneurship of the American people -- and despite Washington Democrats' job-killing agenda of more spending, higher taxes and more regulation," Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said.

Ah, I see. It's a coincidence that the Democrats' recovery efforts produced a recovery. When efforts to create jobs and generate economic growth actually created jobs and generated economic growth, this was, as far as Republicans are concerned, just a wacky twist of fate. One had nothing to do with the other.

Good luck with that.

1. I know we've been told by the M$M and numerous "authorities" that we're in recovery ...
I'm just not feeling or seeing it here?

4. Aside from economic reports, what exactly do you expect to "feel" and "see"?

5. "in recovery" doesn't feel or look like "fully recovered"
the economy is on the mend. it's adding jobs. it IS getting better.

just because it's not where it was at its peak doesn't mean that it's not on the right track or moving in the right direction.

"in recovery" merely means it's moving in the right direction, not that it's there yet.

7. Thank You. The president makes a point of saying this each time he talks...
about job numbers, whether they go up or down. We're not there yet, but we're certainly better off than we were. Any month where we're not losing jobs, is a good month these days. I can't believe the number of so-called "progressives" on this board who seem invested in this administration's failure.

At the beginning of this recession, we were losing 800k jobs a month, and to turn that around, and begin to add jobs, is no small feat.

8. Maybe you are the spokesperson the GOP is looking for, after all the GOP
is looking for someone that can try and spin good news into something bad

2. Yes, good news is not welcome by the
rw fascists or anyone who has an agenda to bring down the President.

3. I am more optimistic about 2012 than 2010
2010 many people will not have felt any recovery at all. It will only be a statistician's recovery by November 2010. I am cautiously optimistic that recovery will feel more "real" in 2012.

They key is to limit our losses this year so we can get most of those seats back in 2012.

6. There are concerns about 2010
Not only does it usually take a while for people to "feel" the recovery, but many of the people who never even lost their jobs are underwater on their mortgages. So they might not be feeling that things are all that great, even if they were never even unemployed.
