Hatch Explains Bennett’s Defeat: Tea Party Doesn’t ‘Have An Open Mind And They Won’t Listen’
Hatch Explains Bennett’s Defeat: Tea Party Doesn’t ‘Have An Open Mind And They Won’t Listen’

Last weekend at the Utah Republican Party’s nominating convention in Salt Lake City, incumbent Sen. Bob Bennett (R) came in a distant third behind two other GOP candidates vying for the three-term senator’s seat. Bennett’s defeat has been heralded as a victory for the Tea Party movement:

National tea party organizers embraced the victory as a major first step toward returning the Republican Party to its conservative foundations of limited government and low taxes. At the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, tea party activists cheered and celebrated after Bennett lost.

“This is a symbol that the tea party movement and the broader limited-government agenda is huge,” said Brendan Steinhauser, grass-roots director for the national tea party organization FreedomWorks.

Today on ABC’s Top Line, Utah’s senior U.S. senator Orrin Hatch (R) was asked how Bennett — who “has long been viewed as a reliable conservative with deep Mormon roots” — could have lost in the party’s nominating process. “It’s hard. People are angry,” he said. Hatch — who has previously warned the Tea Party to start working more closely with the Republican Party — criticized the Tea Party for rallying against Bennett:

HATCH: A lot of these Tea Party people are angry, and I’m angry too. … I mean my gosh, They’re mad. They have a right to be mad and I think these Tea Party people are doing the country a service. But when they don’t have an open mind and they won’t listen, that’s another matter and that’s something I think anybody would find fault with.

4. The GOP should have watched the movie Robocop
When the senior executives of OCP created Robocop, they programmed it with a secret "fourth directive", which prevented Robocop from harming any of its creators.

The GOP needed to program the Tea Party with a fourth directive.

I never know which team is going to show up. When they're hot, they're great. When they're not, they suck.

5. If they had an open mind
they would have gone after bush...for starting a war and spending ungodly amounts of money in that war that threw this country into the mess it is in. They also would have complained when they gave tax breaks to big business to send jobs overseas, when they pursued an energy program that sent us down the road to this oil spill, to the mine in WVA where all those miners were killed.

Their closed mind only goes after a black president and their racist pursuits.

11. And now they're after Hatch...
Hatch May Get Primary Challenge (teabaggers eating their own)

Hatch May Get Primary Challenge

With the defeat of Sen. Robert Bennett (R-UT) over the weekend, tea party activists are now turning their attention to other GOP primary elections in Utah.

In fact, rumors have been swirling that Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) may face a 2012 primary challenge from Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) -- something Chaffetz "did little to shoot down" when talking to Fox News.

Said Chaffetz: "It's a possibility, I'm not taking anything off the table. This anti-incumbent sentiment is a tsunami that isn't going away... I respect everything Senator Hatch has done, but the question is whether 36 years in the US senate might be enough. Orrin will be 78 in 2012."

12. They created the anger,
manufactured it on their faux news organs and astroturf campaigns. Now they are surprised they can't control them. This is so going to backfire on them. They will get a bunch of crazies winning the primaries, so all the sane people will be electing the Dems. What a bunch of idiots.

I do worry, though, the repercussions for the country. Once these teabaggers start losing the general elections, who knows where their anger will take them.

So what part about that makes the teabaggers any different than the rest of the GOP recently?

with these people. If they lose good Republicans because of it, it's their fault. I can't feel sorry for ole Orrin. He himself has lied so much about the health care mandate, which was partly HIS idea back in 1993. Serves him right.

Since they cannot hold the reins in on their shock troops, it'll be the RNC politicians who will feel the first sting rather than any Democrat.

Thanks to the Teabaggers, there's going to be full-fledged Republican civil war coming from the bottom to the top.
