Suppose Kagan had graduated summa cum laude from Cleveland State University
Edited on Tue May-11-10 09:12 PM by brentspeak
instead of Princeton University; and then received her J.D, magna cum laude, from the Ohio State University College of Law rather than from Harvard Law School; and later was appointed dean of the University of Toledo College of Law instead of Harvard Law School: would Obama still have appointed her to replace Stevens on the Supreme Court?

What is the difference between the two sets of institutions?

1. Not much, to a pure learner.
Lincoln was arguably our most self-directed and self-educated president.

LIving where he did didn't stop his mind from seeking information about the world he lived in.

And you missed a key parallel in your assessment, namely the emphasis on community service and the role of law versus the rule of law that threads both Kagan's impulse to teach school and Obama's turning down options for fat-cat law firms right out of college in favor of community work in greater Chicago.

3. Like the high standard that let Bush enter Yale with a C average?
Ivy League schools are the training ground for future protectors of the status quo. The ruling class wants to keep it like that. Sure, there have been exceptions, such as Bonesman William Sloane Coffin, who turned against the Vietnam War and fought for justice, but he was an exception.

7. Not that I know of.
Legacy may get somebody into a program but don't they still have to do the work that everybody else has to do and pass it?

12. By his own admission he had a "gentleman's C" at Yale
he got admitted there as a legacy. The University of Texas refused him entry to its law school. I don't know what the MBA from Harvard cost Poppy.

4. would Obama still have appointed her to replace Stevens on the Supreme Court?
Doubtful.

It seems our government is under the control of both ivy league schools and Goldman Sachs.

Kagan is a twofer.

11. she wouldn't be the same person.
her experiences would be different.

and you're missing one of the most important links: she taught at the university of chicago law school at the same time obama taught there.
