Democratic gubernatorial contender Dannel Malloy will announce Tuesday he has chosen veteran state Comptroller Nancy Wyman to be his running mate as a candidate for lieutenant governor, said a source familiar with the decision.
Malloy's announcement will come a few days after his chief rival for the nomination, Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont, picked Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman as his running mate.
The moves by the two frontrunners for the Democratic nomination underscore the growing intensity of the gubernatorial clash going into the party's May 21-22 nominating convention. Democrats hope to seize the governor's office for the first time since it was occupied by William A. O'Neill in 1991.
In Wyman, a resident of Tolland, Malloy brings gender and geographic balance to his ticket. He also gets a partner known across Connecticut, one who won her last four statewide elections.
