This is their MO - short term thinking, do what ever it takes to get elected, and fuck the consequences tomorrow. That's how they campaign, that's how they govern, and the results are very well known at this point.
Honestly, how do you think the Liberty College crowd came to be embraced by the Republican Party in the first place? Simple - Republicans saw an opening after JFK - a Catholic - got elected to sway protestants who felt disenfranchised to come over to the Republican Party and get one of their own back into office. That's why the Republican platform makes no sense whatsoever - states' rights rule, except when it comes to social issues. Government needs to stay out of people's business... unless they're gay.
Simply put, the GOP tossed the protestants a few bones on abortion and gay rights because those issues didn't much matter, and meanwhile the libertarians and the business community could bark about taxes together and separately bitch about civil rights and government regulations. It was all working until the business community had the bottom dropout and the libertarians started getting pissed about bailouts; meanwhile, the religious right was starting to realize they were been used since abortion is still legal and gay rights keep getting slowly eroded. It's just taken longer for the whole thing to unravel because these folks ain't too quick on the uptake, if you know what I mean.
