Whad does anyone seriously expect Obama -or anyone in the administration -to do
about the oil pollution and the BP crime against us all?

The disaster in the Gulf is JUST BEGINNING, will take decades to deal with completely...it is NOT something that can be stopped even by ending the flow of crude oil from a mile below the ocean's surface...

What can anyone do now?

1. Reach out the World Community's scientists and bring those ...
deep sea submarines to the area to help monitor the leak(s).

Get EVERYONE involved and working together toward a viable solution!

2. Seize the entire company for starters.
Every last nickel of BP's assets, including its subsidiaries, and start calling the shots instead of letting BP continue to fuck things up.

3. Well, I would like him to address the nation
It's not true that he hasn't done anything for the spill, so he should tell us what he has done. His office has been doing frequent updates on their actions via Facebook and I think they need to inform the rest of the country.

He should be an adult, go before the nation and lay out the facts.

On April __, an oil rig in the Gulf exploded

On April___, we did this

Our next course of action was ____

On May ___, we did

Some have argued that we should ____, but the law signed by Ronald Reagan places the spill in charge of the oil companies allowing only for government oversight. In addition, it caps BP's monetary responsibilities at 75 million dollars. This is a company that earns ______ per day. The bill was introduced in Congress by failed to pass. The senators who refused to vote to ensure that BP pays for their mistake instead if the American tax payer are available on www._______.com

4. TAKE OVER THE CLEAN UP.
Make sure every resource is being used to keep it off the beaches and land.

Screw oversight of BP's plans.

Make some plans of their own and act on them.

5. Doesn't the law limit government involvement to oversight?

6. NO! Are you saying the government can't clean up it's own beaches and ocean?

9. But there is a law that says the oil companies are to clean up with Government acting as overseers
"After the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, Congress dictated that oil companies be responsible for dealing with major accidents – including paying for all cleanup – with oversight by federal agencies. Spills on land are overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency, offshore spills by the Coast Guard."

10. And yet there's this:
he U.S. government will move aside BP from the operation to try to halt the Gulf of Mexico oil spill if it decides the company is not performing as required in its response to the well leak, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Sunday.

12. Sort of makes your previous point moot, doesn't it. Boy you sure are gonna
twist in the wind on this.

Now that Obama says he can, you drop your argument that he can't.

I am not twisting in the wind because I refuted myself. Unlike some people, I try to make sure my arguments are valid and if they aren't, I correct them.

Why you've chosen to take such a rude approach to discussions is beyond me.

Edited on Mon May-24-10 07:06 AM by boston bean
how many will cling to the meme that the Gov't can't do a God Damn thing, and that BP has to do it all. Will they stick to their guns and fight Obama on taking over??????

I appreciate you fact checking yourself, but you have to understand how many people on DU say the gov't can't do shit about this. And that is PURE UNADULTERATED BULLSHIT!

11. Obama can order any resource and BP would have to pay.
That is how I understand it.

It's twisted to think that because BP has to pay, they get to call the shots. They do NOT. And the only thing the US can do is sit back and oversee their plans (or rubberstamp them).

The only thing BP should be involved with in the clean up is paying the freaking bill.

19. For starters....
seize control of the situation...quit letting BP run the show. Letting BP run the show is like letting a pedophile run a day-care center - dangerous for all involved.

The one thing, through all this mess that amazes me......is the lack of 'worst case scenario' planning. I retired from one of the biggest chemical companies worldwide and EVERY new process....in accordance with the EPA and OSHA laws....had to have this scenario planned for. Just one catastrophic failure on one system at our site could wipe out a 10 square mile area of flora, fauna, and human life. NO UNIT was ever started with out the safety precautions and procedures already in place for a potential accident. WHY DOESN'T BP HAVE THIS SAME OVERSIGHT BY THE EPA?

20. Just before the gusher burst, Obama was out there preaching
that off shore drilling was now safe, he gave false information, and went out of his way to suggest that he'd looked into it, and found that platform drilling spills are generally safe.
So the first thing he needs to do is correct that pile he dumped on the nation, own that mistake, and correct his position going forward. Politically, he owns the spill because of those words. Many of his supporters were angry when he said them and this is part of the reason why. He was wrong, and we knew it.
You are pretending that he himself was not an active proponent of drilling prior to the gusher, and also that half his base was not already seething about that support.
He said it was pragmatic to drill. Apparently, preparing for accidents is just not pragmatic. So we don't bother. We are pragmatists! Or faith based Christians, depending on the day and what we want to rationalize.

22. That is my main complaint.
I don't fault him for the explosion or for it being a disaster so big that there are no good options.

I do however, wish that he would use this as a teachable moment and as the opportunity as a wake up call for America. He could change his actual position, change policy and use it as the beginning to get us off oil.

Now is the moment, no moment will ever be riper.

23. Long list of that stuff
When he got done with that, he'd have to then explain how and why he switched from 16 months to the SOFA in dealing with Iraq.

Then he'd have to explain why he dumped the public option, added mandates and cadillac taxes, and negotiated with Big Pharma first. Oh, and explain what he meant by "didn't campaign on the public option".

Then he'd have to explain why DADT wasn't addressed in the "first 100 days".

Obama has no intent on going back and explaining how what he said before is no longer true, and how he can change direction 180 degrees, and give no explanation about what has changed. We are just suppose to accept the current rationale as accurate, without question.
