Media Matters: Media falsely suggest gov't is ignoring Louisiana barrier plan

Media falsely suggest gov't is ignoring Louisiana barrier plan

In claiming that the Gulf oil spill is "Obama's Katrina," media figures and outlets have falsely suggested that the federal government has been unresponsive to Louisiana's request for a permit to create sand barriers -- or "berms" -- around the coast. But, as required by law, the Army Corps of Engineers has been studying the plan's impacts and reportedly responded with concerns that it could push oil into Mississippi; and, numerous experts have questioned whether the plan would even be effective.

Media falsely suggest gov't is unresponsive to LA barrier plan

Rove falsely claimed LA officials have "yet to hear back" about barrier permit. In his May 27 Wall Street Journal column, Karl Rove said the Obama administration has "delayed or blown off key decisions requested by state and local governments" and falsely claimed Louisiana has "yet to hear back" from the Army Corps about its plan to create barriers. Later in the column, Rove wrote: "Could this be Mr. Obama's Katrina? It could be even worse." From the column:

Now the administration is intent on making it appear he has engaged all along. But this stance is undermined by lack of action. Where has its plan been? And why has the White House been so slow with decisions?

Take the containment strategy of barrier berms. These temporary sand islands block the flow of oil into fragile wetlands and marshes. Berm construction requires approval from the Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Louisiana officials asked permission on May 11. They have yet to hear back. The feds are conducting a review as oil washes ashore.

2. Yes, this is all the big bad M$M's fault. They're shills for corporations ...
but nobody in the Administration has been out front.

We just had our first firing today.

Why is Salazar still there? He's inept.

6. "but nobody in the Administration has been out front" Nonsense. Statement about day one activities:
For Immediate Release April 22, 2010

Statement by the Press Secretary on the President's Oval Office Meeting to Discuss the Situation in the Gulf of Mexico

The President and First Lady's thoughts and prayers are with the family members and loved ones facing the tragic situation in the Gulf of Mexico. The President was briefed in the Oval Office this afternoon by a number of senior officials including Department of Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano, Admiral Thad Allen, United States Coast Guard Commandant, Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate as well as a host of senior white house officials including Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change Carol Browner, Chair of Council on Environmental Quality Nancy Sutley and Director of the National Economic Council Lawrence Summers.

The United States Coast Guard informed the President that search and rescue efforts are ongoing. The President made sure that the entire federal government was offering all assistance needed in the rescue effort as well as in mitigating and responding to the environmental impact and that this response was being treated as the number one priority. The President asked the responding departments to devote every resource needed to respond to this incident and investigate its cause.

The National Response Team has been activated and Unified and Area Commands have been established near New Orleans to coordinate search and rescue operations and oil spill response efforts.

The Department of the Interior and the Minerals Management Service as well as the Coast Guard are also working with responsible parties to support their important efforts to secure the pollution sources. Deputy Secretary of the Interior David Hayes was dispatched to the region yesterday to assist with coordination and response. The President wishes to thank the bravery of the professionals across the government who have worked non-stop over the last two days to save lives and protect the environment.

5. Media Ignores Brooklyn Spill, which is as large or worse
of course there are no cute critters left alive in Brooklyn/NYC for photo ops. Just exploding manhole covers and stuff....no fresh water source left. Interesting that Bloomberg and his cronies are not being called on to take action there.

7. Forget Rove and Faux. They are irrelevant. What bothers me are the PUMAs, Carville
and Ed Rendell: are they being deliberate in their outrage against the president; or, are they truly ignorant about what's been going on?

8. The whole idea was half baked at best and would probably kill the marshes
as sure as the oil would.

The marshes are brackish and they need the tides to flow in and out to keep them alive and healthy. Also the birds that nest there would still need to feed in the gulf full of oil so they were doomed anyway. And what would happen if a hurricane comes along and floods over them? It would have changed the tidal flow and would have caused erosion. There are just a whole bunch of consequences to consider.

9. It must be true - I heard Mr & Mrs James Matalin say so
I knew CNN was desperate to stir up the shit when I saw that they had trotted out these two losers to trash Obama.

Like their fingerprints aren't all over this clusterfuck in the first place. The one with hair worked for Cheney for chrissakes and IIRC was part of his secret energy task force. The one without hair hates Obama's guts and is basically pissed off with the whole progressive wing of the Democratic party for shunting him to the sidelines and putting Howard Dean in charge of the DNC.

Even Joe Loserman doesn't make me wanna puke as much as those two freaks.

to be built. Some that may effect the spill in a negative way, like with Mississippi, will not.

Coast Guard OKs part of La.'s sand berm plan

(AP) – 38 minutes ago

NEW ORLEANS — Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen has approved portions of Louisiana's $350 million plan to try to protect its coastline from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill with a wall of sand.

Allen announced Thursday that about half of the proposed 86-mile network of sand berms could move forward. He said other sections would not help keep the oil out and could have interfered with cleanup.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was at East Grand Terre Island, a barrier island west of the mouth of the Mississippi River, when the Coast Guard sent out a news release on the berm proposal.

Jindal said he had not been contacted by the Coast Guard or the Army Corps of Engineers and did not know which sections of berm were approved.http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iOF9w6jDsakTlKKa1Qjk9q0ZXuOAD9FVAVN01
