Why he was buried at sea...
I also like the idea of there being no burial place where he can be mourned.

Official: Bin Laden buried at sea
By MATT APUZZO Associated Press
Posted: 05/02/2011 01:41:10 AM MDT

WASHINGTON—A U.S. official says Osama bin Laden has been buried at sea.

After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition. That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said. Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the official said. So the U.S. decided to bury him at sea.

The official, who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security matters, did not immediately say where that occurred.

1. I imagine there was not much ceremony involved
They probably chucked him out with the days garbage.

15. By protocol, a chaplain has to do an Islamic funeral service
I've seen a rabbi working as a chaplain chanting "Allahu akbar" over remains of Islamic fighters, and I have no doubt that a Navy chaplain performed the correct ceremony.

2. Personally, I would have preferred a beach burial
Where the tide ebbs and flows twice in 24 hours.

An unhallowed place that is neither land nor sea.

4. Did you want him buried at Arlington?
The WH decision to bury him within 24 hours and at sea was a good one.

9. sea burial is in accordance with islamic law
Of course that won't satisfy the chorus of people who will use this to foment doubt. Some people want to see a lynching a la uday and qusay. It's so very AMERICAN.

11. Also - his supporters can't demand for his corpse now...
I've heard that the US Military was very concerned that Al Queada would kidnap & hold hostage Americans and demand his corpse be returned in exchange - and this eliminates that possibility.

On the other hand - I wouldn't be shocked if they still had his corpse somewhere, but said it was put into the Ocean...

12. There are a lot of places in the Arabian Sea
The US will have found somewhere with about 1000 fathoms of water and mad sure the body was properly weighted. They do not want anyone finding the body or dredging it up.

13. I always thought he was long dead
so the greater shock was in finding him still alive. Him hanging out in a Cheney style mansion in the one country with nuclear weapons with extremists factions make this more than an act of revenge and it explains the gradual disappearance of videos, etc. as the US came uncomfortably closer.

The millionaire habits put a certain neon sign on his security efforts. The sad efforts of the murderous rich underwritten by arrogant incompetence seems to be a pattern that can be attacked after all.

A whole bunch of clouds have disappeared over a still troubled world.

18. Hi sister, I also like the idea that there will be no place where
he can be visited. I especially appreciate that President Obama and those involved in this mission did the right thing no matter what. I think it is great that they were sensitive to the religious traditions and customs; not for Bin Laden but because it is the proper and correct thing to do. It is the application of the Golden Rule to do to others as you would want them to do to you. Also, it brings to mind the very Christian principal of "turning the other cheek" to not react violently to your enemies. I think this shows a high level of maturity, strength of character, and ethical behavior and spiritual depth - qualities that I am so grateful President Obama can demonstrate because Bush never did.
