Was it the Saudis puting pressure ?

Calling off the Unit to find him in 2004??

allowing Osama to feel safe enough to move to the one place of least suspect?

Is there meat here?

1. Bush wanted to go into Iraq. Since everyone knew
Bin Laden was not in Iraq, they had to downplay Bin Laden's importance.

3. In my darker moments, I suspected that someone made a political calculation
that having bin Laden alive (and therefore still a scary presence in America's psyche) was more "valuable" than the temporary bump Bush would have gotten from doing what Obama finally did.

A view which may be proven by the temporary nature of Obama's bump in the polls, I predict.

The Bush admin governed by stagecraft, not based on what might actually be good policy.

Letting bin Laden stay "at large" fit perfectly with their narrative.

That's what I believe in my darker moments.

In my more charitable moments, I believe they were just terribly incompetent and swept bin Laden under the rug to hide their inability to do anything right.

5. Capturing/killing OBL would have damaged the rationale for invading Iraq...
They started the chant of "Saddam Hussein...lessons of 9/11...WMDs" linking Iraq and 9/11 and impending nuclear attacks to justify the invasion they had planned even before Bush was appointed by SCOTUS.

12. The GOP needed a boogeyman
They got the bills passed they wanted
They raised all kinds of money
Somehow they used national security against a war hero in Kerry

all because they still had a boogeyman to hold over America's head

13. Because even Bush knew Osama didn't do 9/11
And he may have had a conscience with the bin Laden family. And for nothing else, they didn't want a trial. Loose lips sink ships ya know.

16. I think it was because he knew they'd lost him w/no intel to find him....
plus their focus was on Iraq at that point....and obviously getting OBL wasn't a big goal for him (that's an obvious statement; it it had been, he would've pursued it, so I don't think he cared that much about the person OBL).

They decided to go a different route....to take over Iraq to effect change in the M.E., knock out the Taliban in Afghanistan (sort of...to the extent it didn't interfere with Iraq).

It's perplexing. But it was all about Iraq Iraq Iraq. And I guess that means it was about oil oil oil. DON'T FORGET THAT THE BUSH FAMILY WAS FRIENDLY WITH OBL'S FAMILY, TOO.
