The Trump Backlash Begins
By taunting the tycoon with jokes and taking out Osama, the president muscled Donald Trump out of the news. Howard Kurtz on why the master showman will find it hard to repair his image.

The Donald Trump steamroller got run off the road last week, and getting back on track may not be easy.

The wealthy developer surged to the top of the Republican polls with a bombastic media blitz that stunned the political pros, even as many scoffed at the notion that he is seriously running for president. Now he's been roughed up, ridiculed, and, for the moment, knocked out of the news.

Trump, like every other potential GOP candidate, has been utterly overshadowed by the administration’s triumph in killing Osama bin Laden (forcing NBC, irony of ironies, to cut away from Celebrity Apprentice on Sunday night). But the impact may have been greater for The Donald because it made the issue he was loudly pursuing—Barack Obama’s birth certificate—seem so small.

2. Trumps biggest problem is how to get out and to be taken seriously again about ANYTHING.
I feel kinda sad, because he's done so much, I'm not kidding, but this birther thing will stain him all the way to his obituary.

10. Well Trump was the one who decided to pound the birther drum for easy publicity.
No one else's fault if he can't get taken seriously after that, or if world events actually underscore that the Presidency is actually Serious Business.

4. I was one of the ones last week
who said that the President shouldn't have responded to Trump's call for the long form BC, but I have to say, the President's had the last laugh. He had full control of the timing on the bin Laden death announcement, and saved it so that it would pre-empt the last fifteen minutes of "Celebrity Apprentice".

It was his way of saying, "I'm the President, fool, and you're just a gasbag with a bad combover." I loved it!
