Edited on Mon May-09-11 08:15 PM by Liberal_in_LA
'Dead Osama' Swag Makes Me Embarrassed to Be American <-- article title!

No doubt you've already stumbled across some vestige of "Dead Osama" merchandise in your online wanderings. The Internet is flooded with t-shirts, baseball caps, buttons, bumper stickers, phone cases, mugs, and other cheap collectibles commemorating the demise of the terrorist mastermind. Leave it to America to find a way to make a buck by glorifying the death of our enemy on a tchotchke.

1. Hey, I know!
Let's blame it on this President, and elect a fuckward Republican to replace him.

That way, everyone can stop feeling soooo embarrassed.

Our current wars are significantly more shameful.

7. that person's thoughts are now wrong
Edited on Mon May-09-11 08:39 PM by Enrique
before Jan. 2009, they were right, and common, and if someone posted them on DU no one would disagree, let alone attack the person that had those thoughts.

But after Jan 2009, they are a bad person, probably a RW troll, for having those thoughts.

Which is weird, because they did not say one word about Obama, they were commenting on our society.

edit: and he considered himself a socialist, he just knew that this sort of thing was used by those who wanted power, not by those who wanted freedom.

22. Just so we're clear where the Orwellian behavior is coming from...
it seems perfectly fine to accuse DUers of hypocrisy and Orwellian behavior, with no basis for those accusations, but any post that suggests a DUer is flexing their moral superiority muscles in the mirror will be deleted.

There's nothing hypocritical here, except among those who voted for Obama who now have trouble with him keeping his campaign promises.

Look at it this way: two different cops are involved in shootings. Both of them shoot black men.

One of the cops had a history of making racist slurs, and has shot four other black men in questionable circumstances in the past.

The other cop had no history of racism, led diversity awareness workshops, and has no history of shootings.

Is there reason to be more suspicious of one shooting than the other? Hell yes there is.

It's not blind allegiance to Obama that causes DUers to give him more benefit of the doubt than we gave Bush; it's observation and realism. Had Bush done it, we would have been more suspicious, not because of some stupid double standard but because we had seen enough of the man to know what he was made of. Which wasn't anything good.

If Obama continues this kind of behavior, the pragmatic DUers are going to get uncomfortable with him. But the fact is, this is consistent with what he told us before we elected him, and it IS consistent with all his self-presentation as someone who doesn't enjoy warfare but won't hesitate to engage in tactical maneuvers as the situation demands.

Those who paid attention to Obama during the election are having NO cognitive dissonance over this; they're engaging in no Orwellian behavior.

Those who throw his actual words of 2007 and 2008 into the memory hole in order to proclaim this ISN'T what they voted for are behaving Orwellianly. They're pretending history isn't what it used to be, and that the man claimed to be someone different from the man he always claimed to be.

It's sad, disturbing behavior.

25. You're telling me that prior to that date
NO ONE here wanted Osama bin Laden dead, and if he'd been killed everyone would have behaved then like the few hand-wringing posers do now? Glad I wasn't around, sounds like a shitty place full of self-righteous blowhards who hold themselves to be the gatekeepers of the party and national morality as a whole.

If this is all that it took to embarrass that author, he must have been living under a rock, completely oblivious to American culture (or lack of it) his entire life.

Nothing anyone else does embarrasses me.

I take no responsibility for the actions of others I cannot control.

17. It's crap like this that makes me especially glad Obama's President.
Obama went to the podium, delivered a five minute statement, and went back to work.

Bush would have paraglided onto the deck of an aircraft carrier through a ring of fire with The Misfits playing in the background and held Osama's severed head up at the podium and screamed a primal war cry.
