Obama Mocks Republican Position on Immigration - "trying to move the goal posts on us one more time"
Obama Mocks Republican Position on Immigration
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE and ERICA WERNER Associated Press

EL PASO, Texas May 10, 2011 (AP)

Delving into an explosive issue, President Barack Obama stood near the border with Mexico on Tuesday and declared it more secure than ever, trying to build pressure on Republicans to take on a comprehensive immigration overhaul — and eagerly working to show vital Hispanic voters that he is not the one standing in the way.

Countering Republican calls to focus on border security before moving to a comprehensive overhaul, Obama said their demands have been more than met by his administration but "they'll never be satisfied."

On his first trip to the U.S.-Mexico border since becoming president, Obama boasted of increasing border patrol agents, nearing completion of a border fence, and screening more cargo.

"We have gone above and beyond what was requested by the very Republicans who said they supported broader reform as long as we got serious about enforcement," Obama said. "But even though we've answered these concerns, I gotta say I suspect there are still going to be some who are trying to move the goal posts on us one more time."

2. Why is this thread getting rec's and the other one bottomed out?
I would love to hear people's views on this subject. Here, I'll begin. Everyone weigh in. Let's Talk.

He's hitting the right tone. Informing as well as persuading.

It's the people who are hiring illegal aliens, and have done so for a century or more, that encourages them to continue immigrating here. As long as Obama takes it from the employer side of things, the situation may rectify itself.

And the upside, if they stay in their own countries, hopefully with a democratic vote, they can change the political landscape. Of course, Americans may not like to hear this, but that's going to mean more socialistic states like Venezuela. Personally, it works for them. We can't have it all go our way.

3. You asked for it
The President's proposal of immigration reform has as much chance of passing in Congress as Paul Ryan's Medicare plan. It's just speechifying for its own sake, or to convince people who haven't a clue how government works that the politician proposing the impossible is "doing something".

In between the extremes of deporting every illegal alien, and giving every one of them citizenship, there's a middle path: the status quo. One thing it has going for it, is that it's already in place. No extra expenditure needed.

Besides, if every illegal were awarded citizenship, there would just be the next bunch of illegal aliens to replace them as the docile workforce that farmers, ranchers, and dishonest businesspersons seem to be addicted to. We'd be telling that next group of border-jumpers that all they have to do is wait 20-30 years, and they, too, can get a piece of the pie.

8. PFLAG suppports equal marriage rights
Unlike the President of the United States, who claims gay people 'lack a spiritual element' to our relationships that people like Newt have, because they are 'Sanctified By God'. Friends of mine do not oppose my basic human rights. Nor do they downplay the need for equal rights for everybody, no matter what some people might 'believe'.

9. Yes, PFLAG supports equal marriage rights.
I have two gay children. I support 100% equality for all.

I also believe that this President is working toward that goal regardless of his personal beliefs. And I'm not the only one who believes http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/54539">this.
