1. I voted "no." President Obama is the target of a lot of racism, but he is a Dem too.
Just being a member of a political party will earn one scorn.

17. That's kind of replacing direct with indirect racism, though
In the South, at least, much of the hatred for the Dems comes from the fact that they are percieved as "the n****rs' party". So if Obama were white, they wouldn't hate him for being black, they would hate for (as they see it) being a traitor to his race.

Edited on Tue May-10-11 09:10 PM by jenmito
but they hate him more because he's a BLACK Dem. with Hussein as his middle name. There are racists who now have a man of color who is the "boss of them" in their minds, and they can't live with that.

5. I am convinced the hate and vitriol would be just as bad if it was President Hillary Clinton
or President Joe Biden.

Now, are some of the Obama haters racist? Yes, but they are also extreme rightists, and they would be pissing and moaning about any white Democrat for non-racial reasons.

8. One does not obviate the other.
There would always be reasons for them to hate a Democratic Party President, regardless of race or gender. This does not mean that race has nothing to do with their hatred of this President, just that they would find other reasons, or make them up as they did with Bill Clinton.

15. The racism...
Is just the icing on that five tier cake of hate. They may hate him a little less, but still hate him because they would be told to hate him by their heros on FOX, Limbaugh, the republican leadership, etc.

I remember I saw my first "Impeach Clinton" bumpersticker just months after he was elected to his first term. The republican leadership went after him like rabid dogs....and the people on the right followed. I know he had issues regarding sex...everybody knew. But I wouldn't be surprised if we find out one day that he was entraped. Like putting a drink in front of an alcoholic. Lewinski and Tripp always seemed like an odd friendship to me. He's still to blame of course and should have known better...just sayin....

22. Exactly!!
They were intent on impeaching Clinton, and by Golly, if they couldn't find anything criminal on Whitewater, Travelgate, etc.; they were sure going to find a way to impeach him one way or the other. In the meantime, millions of dollars and 5 years of constant persecution yielded the horrible crime of a married man lying about his infidelity. Aha!!! They finally found the high crime and misdemeanor that warranted impeachment. The whole travesty and hypocrisy still makes me ill.

These bastards didn't care what they did to the country, to the Clintons and to all the staffers who were dragged through the mud and who were left in debt (the Clintons alone owed over 2.5M). When Bill left the WH, to his credit, he worked very hard to pay off his legal bills and that of several staffers. I remember Maggie Williams saying at the time that her debt was over 250K.

38. Out of curiosity was there nobody willing to do that stuff pro bono?
I would think that given the abundance of lawyers in the Democrtic Party, somebody would gladly do legal work for the staffers for free to make a name for themself. Or would that have violated ethics rules?

27. Honestly, I think "Hussein," Kenya, and Indonesia are the things that really rankle the Right
It's the vaguely foreign, Muslim-friendly aspect of Obama that bothers them, I think, more than his blackness. They effin' love Herman Cain. Still, yes, if he were white they'd hate him too, just maybe not quite as crazily.

28. No, but their hate would not be at the level of hysteria we've seen
The birth certificate would not be an issue (even if the white Dem President had a foreign born parent).

It wouldn't matter what the pastor of any church he'd ever attended once said.

No one would suggest he did not write his own book.

right wingers would still hate him, because he's a Democrat. They hated Clinton and Carter, so it's likely they'd hate O'Bama - if such a guy existed.

Enough said.

36. I guess people forgot he's half caucasian...
there is the true ugliness of racism, worried about hi s color as opposed to the facts involved.

If we are to judge any man or woman, we can only use the content of their character to do so.

Charles Manson is white, but what character he has is horrific. There are individuals of every race, every ethnic background, every religion ands everything else, that just plain suck...but we can only use their character, (or lack thereof) to pass a valid judgment. To use color, ethnicity, sex, gender, religion or anything else does not only a disservice to the individual, but to the group that individual comes from, and to ourselves.

R's will never get it, but we certainly should.

39. That's what I was trying to explain to people when they said Obama couldn't win
Edited on Fri May-13-11 11:06 PM by Hippo_Tron
People were telling me that he'd do worse than John Kerry in a lot of swing states because white people wouldn't vote for him. I told them that the vast majority of people who vote on race left the Democratic Party a long time ago. Yea there are a few places that Obama did worse than John Kerry, because a few people could swallow a white Democrat and not a black one, but they are largely places that are so racist that no Democrat stands a chance.

40. No, but I think racism plays a part
Remember, Republicans hated Clinton too. They probably would hate any Democratic president. And I don't think the whole Tea Party movement is based on racism, but I definitely feel like there's a racial undertone and that some of the hatred is motivated by racism.
